TRB500 three times slower than my cell phone

With TRB500 the led only shows 4G and the download is 100MBit at best

My phone shows 5G up to 300MBit on my phone in the same location with the same SIM

the bands are the same band 1,3,20

both measured with speedtest to Salt Mobile SA

I have tested all firmware versions, from version 7.04.5 and higher the 5G no longer works and the performance remains equally poor.

I expected at least the same speed as the cell phone

Hello,

Thanks for reaching us,
I would like to inquire whether you have experimented with the TRB500_R_00.07.06.1_WEBUI.bin

Please log into the CLI (System → CLI) with the username root, and the same password as the WebUI. Then run the command gsmctl -A 'AT+QENG="SERVINGCELL"' and post the output here. For privacy reasons, I’d recommend blurring CellID for the LTE line. Explanation of the returned values can be found here: Locking Devices to a Mobile Cell - Teltonika Networks Wiki .

Best regards,

root@TRB500:~# gsmctl -A ‘AT+QENG=“SERVINGCELL”’

Hello,

  • Could you check what firmware is currently installed on the internal modem of the TRB500?
    This can be checked by navigating to the System → Firmware, and it should start with RG501QEU…

  • I would like to confirm the firmware version currently in use.

  • kindly post the output of the command

gsmctl -A 'AT+QCAINFO'

gsmctl -A 'AT+QENG="SERVINGCELL"'

Thanks,

Dear Mahmoud

This is the output you asked for

Dear Tom,

Thank you for providing clarification and your response.

It appears that the device is currently linked to the n28 5G band. To address this, we plan to update the modem firmware. This update aims to resolve specific issues related to the n28 5G band on particular 5G networks. Additionally, it aims to address situations where the device is connected to 5G, but the connection is not being reported.
We have prepared the instructions on the modem update process:

Thanks,
Mahmoud

Dear Mahmoud

in the link you send me is written:
EDIT: For TRB500 users, we ask you to wait until the release of v7.5 of RutOS. The modems within these devices use different firmware, which is still in the testing phase.

In the link you sent me it says it is fixed in 7.5. But I already have 7.6.

It looks like I have a beta release
how can that be
I updated with the standard procedure no beta
root@TRB500:~# gsmctl -y
RG501QEUAAR12A05M4G_OCPU_BETA_20211020D_04.001.00.000

Hello,

These are the steps to update the firmware of the TRB500

  • Ensure the internal modem is stable - either leave it on 4G-only mode, or remove the SIM;
  • It is trivial to ensure a stable power connection to the device during the process. If the power is lost, the device may end up not booting and will need to be returned for repair.
  • Download the binary file here (password: A9gvL0t4d6a6);
  • Ensure the TRB500 is running the latest RutOS firmware. The latest release can be downloaded here .
  • Log into the WebUI of the TRB500, and navigate to System → Firmware → Update Firmware;
  • Select the Update from option as File;
  • Select Modem Firmware as the Firmware type;
  • Upload the downloaded modem_upgrade_trb500.bin file (this may take a while):

  • Start the update process:

  • The router will reboot;

One the router boots back up, verify that the firmware update was successful by navigating to System → Firmware → Update firmware. The installed firmware version should be RG501QEUAAR12A08M4G_04.200.04.200.

Thanks,

Dear Mahmoud

  1. I updated to RG501QEUAAR12A08M4G_04.200.04.200.
    I’m a little surprised that the modem firmware isn’t on the official website
  2. 5G is now running perfectly.
  3. I took a few measurements, the trb500 currently has 170MBbps max at 5G and is running stable. My smartphone currently has 220Mbps max. There is still room for improvement but it is now usable.
    Thank you very much

Hi Mahmoud,

I have also had problems with connecting to 5G despite that my mobile has good 5G connection with same operator Telia.

I did update the modem but after the update the version is RG501QEUAAR12A08M4G_04.200.00.000 is this right or should I have the 4.200 at the end also. I have done the update twice but it doesn’t change and no 5G connection.

Best wishes
Lars

I updated to the new 7.06.1 yesterday and switched from brigde mode to NAT.

I don’t know which of the changes that contributed but my Telia connection is now about double for DL and unchanged or sometimes slightly lower for UL.

DL is now at 350-480 Mbps depending on which device i use and if its Android or Windows, wired or WiFi, and it used to be 180-220 Mbps.

I’m using https://bredbandskollen.se because i find the speedtest in TRB500 and in Unifi Network unreliable.

About 5G or not the LEDs on TRB500 are unfortunately not to be trusted.

If i understand it correctly operators can use different modes to give a device 5G and one (“NG”?) will establish a 4G connection first and then upgrade it to 5G… but the 5G LED will not light up.

Hello,

That is okay; this is just a different release version for the modem firmware, but the issue is addressed within both of them. R12A08 is the most significant part.

Regarding the availability of 5G connections, have you checked if your service provider offers 5G in your area? Additionally, you can verify the connection through a web-based interface.

Navigate to the “Status” section, then select “Network,” and finally, choose the “Mobile” option.

Thanks,

Hi @anon74548148 ,

The modem shows always 4G+ as before and I have full 5G coverage in my house with my IPhone a same operator Telia. The modem also has two directional mimo antennas on the roof of the house and a visible mast from the roof.

Best Wishes
Lars

Hello,

Could you please attempt to use the set of four mobile antennas provided within the Teltonika box?

Thanks,
