TRB500 modem firmware update

Hello,

I have a TRB500 and the current modem firmware is RG501QEUAAR12A10M4G_04.200.00.000. I’ve read that there is a new modem firmware available, revision RG501QEUAAR12A11M4G_04.200.04.200. Should I update it manually or wait for the new RutOS?

I’m also asking this question because my TRB500 does have issues choosing the right cell tower. It always uses the tower around 6kms further away than the closest one. Resulting in RSRP -110dBm.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Have you tried updating the internal modem firmware via the WebUI from the server? If not, please try doing so.

Hello,

It doesn’t allow me to update via OTA. I can only update the system firmware.

Hovering over the ‘info’ icon it says, “Modem updates from the server are not supported for this device”.

PS: The system firmware is the newest version TRB500_R_00.07.09

Hello,

Sorry for any inconvenience. I will send you the RG501QEUAAR12A11M4G_04.200.04.200 firmware image via email. To proceed, please fill out the form you will receive, and I will contact you privately. For the ticket ID, please use “7718”.

Hello,

I filled out the form with the necessary details and the right ticket ID. Thank you for your help!

Is this the newest version for the modem or is there even a newer one?

And is there a way to backup the old firmware if the update fails?

Best regards

Hello,

Thank you for filling out the form! You should receive an email from us shortly.

The firmware I mentioned is the latest version.

If you’d like to revert to an older firmware, I can send you instructions privately on how to do so.

Best regards,

Hello,

I got your email but the link with the file attached, has a file with 0 bytes. It seems corrupt. Can you send it again please?

Thanks! Best regards

Just for my personal understanding - why is there such a huge secret behind a modem firmware upgrade for the TRB500 model?
I’ve upgraded my 50+ RUTX50 farm’s modems instantly via FOTA, without any glitch.
When people here in the Community ask for TRB500 modem upgrades, why for god’s sake it needs to be sent via email by Teltonika staff?
It is so so complicated - but why?
Why the TRB500 can’t be upgraded via FOTA like the RUTX50?
Can you please elaborate?

Also asking as Teltonika seems to have huge issues with their email system - what ever you use there.
I am reading this Community a lot and almost every time you guys switch from posting to emailing, people report back that they didn’t receive your emails, it is unclear to use “support code” (4 digits from URL) or you guys having issues not getting people’s emails.

In general - so so so and unnecessary complicated.
See above - why user receives an email from you with a zero KB attachment?
Make it FOTA and off we go.

Sorry for ranting but I read these issues all over the place :frowning:

There is this article: TRB500 modem update proceedure
But it is much too hard to find!
I only found it after another forum member pointed me to it…

Its from 2023. There are already many rev. since then.

And its still not addressing the issue with manually installing the modem firmware update file instead of provisioning it over FOTA

Well, I recently bought my TRB500 but it came with an old “beta” firmware and the above update solved an issue for me.
But I think the modem firmware files should appear on a wiki page together with release notes, similar to the firmware of the unit itself: TRB500 Firmware Downloads - Teltonika Networks Wiki
(or on that same page)

For anyone who wants to upgrade the modem by themselves, i uploaded the file the support gave me to my google drive. I don’t know if it gets deleted, so get it while it’s hot

PS: The fw update worked flawlessly with uploading it over the overlay. Can’t say for now if it’s better or worse, just updated it moments ago.

I also encountered one issue with the official Quectel file. It’s way too big for the flash drive to handle it (140MB file size vs 90MB flash) and also in the wrong file format .zip (could be because of compression size?). I guess the TRB500 gets the firmware manually because of that. But still, if the support already has a .bin compressed file, while not provide it to the public? There are way more dangerous instructions who could potentially destroy your modem, also provided in the Teltonika wiki, than updating with a firmware file. (f. e. cell locking with QWNLOCK, it’s not even officially supported by Quectel Locking Devices to a Mobile Cell - Teltonika Networks Wiki)
