Tailscale Showing Version Out of Date

I just installed Tailscale from the Package Manager on my RUTX50, currently running RUTX_R_00.07.16.6.

However, in my Tailscale console, it shows the version being 9 releases out of date.

No new update is available in Package Manager.

Attempts to update via Tailscale fail.

Attempts to update via RUTOS CLI also fail.

My questions are as follows:

  1. Is there a security risk with the version via the Package Manager being out of date?
  2. When do new versions of Tailscale get updated via Package Manager?
  3. Are there any potential issues installing directly from Tailscale using the commands below?
mkdir -p /tmp/ts && cd /tmp/tswget

opkg install ./tailscaled_aarch64_cortex-a53.ipkopkg install ./tailscale_aarch64_cortex-a53.ipk

Hi

you can run

tailscale update

if you need the latest version.

Just a quick PSA: be careful when updating Tailscale arbitrarily as it can break. I suggest sticking with the version available with whatever package manager bundles for your firmware build. In the 7.17.x track, you can get up to 1.86.2 which is fairly recent.

See RutOS firmware 7.17.x + Tailscale (any post-1.70 version) = broken for more…

Hello @andrewfromlondontown,

I’d like to inform you that performing manual updates to the service can lead to various errors.

We officially declare which Tailscale version is supported by RutOS and ensure that it is fully integrated into the RutOS ecosystem. Manual updates break this integration and may cause the service to stop working.

When you update your device’s RutOS firmware, it will automatically include the latest Tailscale version supported by RutOS. Support for newer Tailscale versions will be added in the future.

Best regards,
