When the device first boots, tailscaled is not started, and so the /var/run/tailscale/tailscaled.sock socket is not active:
root@r2-rnhq:~# tailscale status
failed to connect to local tailscaled; it doesn't appear to be running
From CLI, it can be run manually just by typing tailscaled after which, login and connectivity work, but the GUI still says “stopped”
# tailscale version

tailscale commit: c47caa10d6268583103fd4363792f577a584492c
long version: 1.86.2-tc47caa10d-gf5d087d04
other commit: f5d087d0447069b01b0b15ce03b54419a210d405
go version: go1.24.4
Actually I did some deeper testing, I went back and tested EVERY tailscale ARM version available post 1.70, which is what still ships with the firmware (very old!)
None of them work. So this is a more general problem with this firmware, as I am quite sure I’ve been able to run 1.8x versions on my RUTX11 for many months now.
We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.
For more effective troubleshooting, we kindly ask you to provide a troubleshoot file from the device running Tailscale. To proceed, I have sent you a form to fill out. Once it is completed, I will contact you privately. Please use “15175” as the ticket ID when filling out the form.
I am just reminding here that I have filled the form, and collected the Troubleshoot file, but I have not received any info on how to send it to Teltonika.
I can confirm that tailscale is broken on latest release.
We were looking at a potential +100 RUTX09 deployment but that doesn’t look like a good idea anymore.
The tailscale is going offline/online and looses connection. Says it cannot connect derp relay. And subnet routing is not working either.
I have been testing this set-up for the last couple of months on 2 RUTX09 and just received a new RUTX09 today and upgraded firmware to latest release.
The fix for this issue is expected to be included in the 7.17.3 firmware version . Unfortunately, I don’t have an exact release date yet, but I will update you as soon as I have any news.
I updated my test device to 7.17.3 release from 2025-09-05. Initially, my Tailscale was still non-functional. So I dug deeper, and attempted to scour the filesystem of any traces of tailscale (assuming that some config issue was causing this)
I have received a response from our developers regarding this matter. They have confirmed that performing manual updates to the service can lead to various errors, and doing so is at your own risk.
We officially declare which Tailscale version is supported by RutOS and ensure that it is fully integrated into the RutOS ecosystem. Manual updates break this integration and may cause the service to stop working.
Okay, I understand the response. Still, I would hope that the issue can be looked into, since having version parity across all tailscale nodes is desirable.
Thank you for your understanding. For now, our developers suggest restoring to a supported version. Support for the new version will be added in the future.
