Second wired wan problem

Hello everyone I try to explain better a previous post of mine that describes an error that I can not solve so I ask for your kind help
My router is ROU950 firmware RUT9_R_00.07.06.5
The current scenario is a wired WAN with two LTE WANs, I have configured an openVPN client and failover between wired wan and one lte wan and everything works fine.
To have better performance I need to add a second wired wan on another carrier here’s what I did:
-I created a port based vlan including the ethernet port where comes the connection to use with the second wan (eth0.2 third RJ port)
-on the network>wan page I added a second wlan with in the phisic port eth02

at every save and apply I have got no error

in network > failover I activated wan2, put in metric at position 2 wan2
now the first error
in the rules if I go to edit the default and enter the wan2 and save get"an unexpected error"
if I leave the only wan2 just creatala only wandel router does not work the vpn even if it is indicated “connected vpn”
what’s wrong? why a second wan can’t be configured in failover and not work with the vpn? what can I check?
Thank you all very much

Here’s a shorter troubleshooting guide:

  1. VLAN Check: Ensure VLAN eth0.2 is correctly set up.

  2. WAN Settings: Confirm unique IPs and gateways for both WANs.

  3. Failover Setup: Set metrics (1 for primary, 2 for secondary) in Network > Failover.

  4. VPN Config: Ensure OpenVPN settings allow traffic through both WANs.

  5. Logs Review: Check logs for errors after changes.

  6. Firmware Update: Look for updates that may fix multi-WAN issues.

  7. Factory Reset: Reset and reconfigure if needed.

If problems persist, consider seeking support or providing error details.

Thank you for your helpful answer, maybe I found the problem (but not the solution)
Now I have two WAN wired the wan and wan2 ,I followed the instructions to create the wan 2
With WAN active and WAN 2 deactivates and no failover the vpn works fine
With WAN 2 activated and WAN disabled r no failower the vpn works fine
I configured a simple failover (if the WAN has no connection WAN 2 becomes main) but if the WAN does not connection WAN 2 is not used for the VPN (as logged) and VPN continues to search for the VPN server on the WAN without switching on WAN 2
I noticed that the WAN even without connection has always a state UP because the router has the active port, could this be the problem? How can I put the WAN port down if I have no connection (i.e. no ping)?
Thank you for your patience and support

Hello to be more clear (I hope) I have sent 3 images
Here You can see my wan 2 active and the wan down

Here the vpn log what continue to try the connection with the vpn server

And here the wan what seans active also if have no connection

BUT all this not happen if i force disabled manually the faulting wan

Thank you !

a last word , if I edit the default_rule on failsafe section and insert the new wan (WAN2) the system do not save it end exit with a “unexpected error”
Regards

Glad to hear that you found the exact problem. I hope you will find the solution as well.

Hi Giorgio183,

I believe I have replied to your previous Crowd query. ROUT950 failover with second wired wan. Failover won’t work because the second wired wan is not added in the rules policies. I have already informed the development team about this. Thank you for your patience.

Regards,

Thank you for the update! It’s great to hear that you’ve communicated this issue to the development team. Adding the second wired WAN to the rules policies sounds like a crucial step for ensuring proper failover functionality. I appreciate your efforts in addressing this, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it gets resolved. Please keep us posted on any further developments!
