RUTX50 5G Regular disconnects from 5G network

Hi,

I’m experiencing frequent disconnections from the mobile network, mostly during the early morning hours (between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM). Sometimes the router reconnects on its own, but other times it gets stuck in a connect/disconnect loop until I manually reboot it.

The images below show the end and the beginning (respectively) of the reconnect cycle on 19/03. On 17/03, the cycle started at 2:20 AM and ended at 5:50 AM. On 16/03, it started at 2:40 AM and did not stop until I rebooted the router at 8:00 AM.

The router has a factory image. Only configured the SIM for mobile connection and added a script to connect to an internal server over SSH.

Your signal strengths are very poor indeed.

Where is the RUT? Is it indoors, in a vehicle? Are you using the supplied antennas or have you purchased one of your own?

I would have a look at cellmapper.net , find yourself and then using the menus and tools etc etc find where your operators masts are. Knowing where your masts are and in which direction they are in move the RUT to a position in your home facing the direction of a chosen mast.

Go to Network > Mobile > Connection and disable VoLTE and band selection to manual then disable all bands that have a frequency of less than 20Mhz. Your first one would be band LTE B20.

Save and Apply then i would reboot.

Using the connected Cell ID and cellmappers tools you can calculate which mast you are currently connected to on the map. Are you connected to a mast at a sensible distance? Line of sight, what’s in the way by way of (In your own building), buildings outside, nearby, trees and hills further afield etc?

I am 500m away from the cell tower. There a residential building between cell tower and the router. It router is facing the tower (just by chance). Using supplied antennas.

I have other location with same issues (but can’t access to get status data at the moment, it is disconnected from the internet…).

I understand signal here is poor. But I would be expecting it to reconnect with success, since that it reconnects when I reboot the device, and keeps connected during the day.

If rebooting the device temporarily resolves the issue, you may consider configuring an automatic Ping Reboot as a workaround.

You can do this by navigating to System → Maintenance → Auto Reboot, where you can enable a predefined rule that periodically checks connectivity (for example, by pinging 8.8.8.8). By default, the device can be set to perform a ping test every 5 minutes, and if no response is received, it will automatically reboot.

Additionally, have you noticed anything unusual in the system logs that might help identify the root cause of the issue, such as recurring errors or warning messages?

This information would be very helpful for further investigation.

Thank you for your support.

I will enable the periodic ping to check for connectivity, but I would rather not reboot the entire device, because we have a custom application that must remain available on the LAN even without internet access.

Is there anything specific I should look for in the logs? I can see several errors, but I’m not sure which ones are expected and which might indicate a bug in the modem/firmware.

I can’t attach files due to forum permissions, so I’ve appended an anonymized system log below, covering a successful reconnection event. When I get a failed reconnection, I will also collect and share that log.

Hi Tiago,

Thanks for the details. The 2 - 6 AM window strongly suggests the disconnects are triggered by carrier-side maintenance or cell load adjustments, after which the modem gets stuck in a re-registration loop.

Could you please:

Confirm whether you’ve applied the band locking suggested above (disabling B20, disabling VoLTE).
Check if a modem firmware update is available under System → Firmware.
Change the connection mode from “5G only” (if set) to 5G preferred.
Temporarily disable your SSH script to rule it out as a contributing factor.

As a workaround, please enable Ping Reboot as suggested so the device recovers automatically overnight.

Thank you for the support.
I understand what you describe about the carrier-side maintenance.

I have disabled VoLTE and B20.
Connection is set to 5G/4G/3G Auto. I can’t find 5G preferred option

Router & modem are updated:

Also disabled my SSH script.

Today there were no reconnections. Considering that might be a carrier-side maintenance to trigger the reconnection, perhaps there was no maintenance today. Let’s check tomorrow.

Atas, It may have been better to have started a new topic of your own, but never mind.

Repositioning of the RUT in the building would be my first thing to do.

Your signal strengths are very very poor indeed. To improve signal strength can you move the RUT to a position that will get a better signal from the mast that you’re connecting to. Do you know where the mast is, direction and distance? If the mast is in a SW direction move the RUT to a window sill as high as possible in the building and to the SW part of the house as a test

I would also to get started disable bands, B20 and B28 and turn off VoLTE. You could also untick all other LTE bands with a frequency of less than 20Mhz.

Save & Apply, possible reboot.

Do you know where the mast is that you are connected to?

Direction and distance, what’s in the way by direct line of sight? In your own home, other Buildings, trees, hills, industrial estates, pylons etc.

How far away is it?

Parking your bottom on the RUT looking in the direction of the mast that you’re connected to with the naked eye only you can actually see it?

I would have a look at cellmapper.net , find yourself and then using the menus and tools etc etc find where your operators masts are.

Using the connected Cell ID and cellmappers tools you can calculate which mast you are currently connected to on the map. Are you connected to a mast at a sensible distance?
