And after that, nothing works anymore until reboot.

In webui, i see briefly that router is connected to N28 and also several 4g bands, but none of the packets go trough. After a while, whole connetion is dropped and only way to get it back is to disable 5G completely.

Is that SW or HW issue?

hi…

Look here…

Unfortunately, it did not work.
Added option dhcp ‘0’ to mob1s1a1 config section in /etc/config/network
After that rebooted (just to see if everything works), and it did.
Then switched mobile connection from “4G only” to “5G/4G/3G auto” and result was exactly same as before.

Hello,

Please ensure that your device is operating on the latest RutOS firmware (7.11.3), which can be downloaded here: RUTX50 Firmware Downloads.

Could you also share a screenshot of the Status → Network → Mobile page where the N28 band signal strength is displayed? You can find recommendations for optimal signal strength here: Mobile Signal Strength Recommendations.

Additionally, please check the following:

  1. PDP Type: Go to Network → WAN → Mobile Interface → Edit and ensure the correct PDP type is selected.
  2. APN Settings: Verify that the correct APN is being used and try setting it manually if necessary.

Lastly, could you provide the internal modem firmware version of your device? You can find this information under System → Firmware → Update firmware, next to the internal modem firmware section.

Best regards,

Hi, Marija

Firmware is RUTX_R_00.07.11.3
Modem firmware is RG501QEUAAR12A11M4G_04.201.04.201
(Device come with different firmwares, cant remember exactly what version it was, but behaivour was same, after switching 5G on - no network connection at all. So i updated it to latest available.)
PDP type for mob1s1a1 is IPv4 (changing that to IPv4/IPv6 des not make any difference, what i have not tried yet is to put it on IPv6 only)
APN is currently auto, but i tried to put it to manual but again, result was exactly same.

Thank you for providing the information. From your screenshot, it appears that the signal strength is poor, which is likely the cause of the issue you are experiencing.

Please ensure that the original mobile antennas are properly connected to the RUTX50 at a 90-degree angle. Additionally, you might want to consider using an antenna with higher gain. If the device is stationary and the location of the cell tower is known, using a directional antenna could also be a good option. A directional antenna would provide the best signal, but it will need to be aligned with the cell tower for optimal performance.

Once the signal improves, I recommend attempting to replicate the issue to see if the situation changes.

Best regards,

Previous screenshot does not represent normal state.
Since qmi_wwan module is failing, i had to make sure i get screenshot as fast as i can (during connection initiating) because in later state, there is nothing to see, all values are N/A.
But if connection is made normally (4G), then signal is also poor at the beginning, but in some seconds it gets better and stays so.

This screenshot is when router is workink on 4G only, and download speed during that time is about 60-70Mbit/s.
And i do use two 18dBi directional antennas.

But, reason for kernel module (qmi_wwan) failure is due to poor signal?

The qmi_wwan issue in the logs indicates that the modem is not accepting data for transfer. Additionally, when the signal strength drops below -100 dBm, we cannot guarantee a stable and reliable mobile connection.

Could you kindly confirm the ports on which you are using the two 18 dBi directional antennas?

Best regards,

Directional antennas are connected to side ports.
I do have antennas that came with router connected to middle ports, should i remove them completely?

Router itself is located on second floor right behind window, and facing cell tower which is about 5-6km away, but there are some trees that block the view to tower, if those trees wouldnt be there, then tower lights would be directry visible from distance at night.

As for low signal, i do have Nokia FastMile 5G unit, since it does only have built in antennas and no option to add external antennas, therefore it has vely low signal and troughput (indoors, did not test it outside). But it does work on 5G network, but RUTX50 does not with better signal.

Also, i did see green (excellent) RSRQ on 5G band couple of times while testing switching to 5G.
But since modem goes away right after connection is made, most of the times UI will end up showing N/A before i see green RSRQ, but it did happen. If you like, i could try to get screenshot for you where N28, B3, B20 are green and B1 is orange (this band never has been green).

One test i did once was to set all bands to manual, and allow only B20 and N28, and then both of them were green, but again, no internet connection (did not look log at that time).

Thank you for providing detailed information.

For testing purposes, could you please try using all four original antennas that came with the RUTX50 and let me know if you observe any changes?

Best regards,

Sure, no problem.

And also what i was thinking to to is to drive close to tower with router and test 5G there, where signal is strong.

It will take some time and i’ll get back to you with results when i have them.

OK, i went close (150m) to tower. Signal was good, Speedtest showed ~200Mbit/s down and ~100Mbit/s up. This was 4G only.

Now, i switched router to 5G/4G/3G auto mode. Router restarted connection:

Ping was running whole time, IP address was shown by UI, but no packets got answer.

Then, again, after 10 seconds, same qmi_wwan module problem appeared on log:

After that, UI showed weird things:

And router tried and tried to restart connection again and again, but it failed every time.
Since at this point, modem was (sort of) available, i managed to set config back to 4G only, but even that did not resulted succsessfull connection.
Only thing that helped was reboot, and after that (4G) connection was made, and everything worked again.

Conclusion: this in not signal issue, since close to tower, singal was very good.

I did not test router in its stationary place with antennas that came with router, since there was no point of doing that after test that was made close to tower resulted same behaviour as “low signal” in routers stationary location.

At this point, i’m thinking that we can also rule out SIM issues, since that SIM worked with Nokia router on 5G network.
edit: forgot to mention, that i tested router with different SIM also (same operator), results were same - no 5G connection.

Only thing that i can test more is to switch operator.
In that same tower, tere is also 5G offered by other operator (Telia), but i have to get Telia SIM first, so it will take some time.

Hi, could.you please test with standard antennas? It can cause this too, better to know that antennas is not a root cause for this.

I did test it with standard antennas close to cell tower where signal was good.

Hello,

I have sent you a form to fill out. Once completed, I will contact you privately regarding this issue. Please use “11750” as the ticket ID.

Best regards,

Update:

Bought prepaid SIM that works on Telia EE (24801) network.

And this SIM works without problems. Signal is not the best, DL is about 60Mbit/s and UL is about 10Mbit/s.

This Telia sim is now in socket 2.
Previously i tested this socket also with Tele2 EE SIM, but result was same as if Tele2 EE SIM was in socket1.

Now i’m suspecting those Tele2 SIMs. Both SIMs are about same age (~4y).
Maybe i will exhange one of them to newer one.
Also, in next week i’ll get another operator (Elisa) SIM for testing.

Hello,

Thank you for the information. Please let me know once you replace the SIMs and how it goes. If you need further assistance, we will proceed accordingly.

Best regards,

Hi Marija

Got Tele2 replacement sim, but result is same, no 5G connection.
First connection after switching on 5G shows that it is connected (nothing goes trough), and after that, modem is gone, then reappears and then is unable to connect anywhere.

Did two tries (reboots), only thing that it is different is that i did not see that qmi_wwan module failure in logs, but with old sim, i did not see that every time also.

Hello,

Thank you for trying a different SIM. You will receive an email from us shortly.

Best regards,

Small update:

Got different Tele2 SIM, looks completely different, maybe other manufacturer or different batch, idk.
But result is same, as soon as i switch on 5G, no more internet.
And in this case that module problem was again in log:

Got also third operator SIM (Elisa), but Elisa has so poor coverage here that only B20 is stable, other bands keep appearing sometimes, but they are useless, signal is so low that they dissapear after some seconds, also Elisa 5G coverage does not seem to reach here, so i was unable to test 5G on Elisa network.
