RUT976 Won't Mount 2TB microSDs

I have been unable to mount a 2TB microSD card in the RUT976. I contacted CS, and they directed me to post about it here. Here are the behaviors I’ve been experiencing

In firmware version 7.21

The router will not boot with a 2TB, 1TB, or 8GB card inserted. It still won’t boot when the cards are removed. All lights on the unit remain solid, and when pinged, the unit is unreachable. After a hard reset, it takes about 20 minutes to boot.

When I tried a hot insert after a clean boot, the card wasn’t recognized.

I tested with exFat and ext4-formatted cards.

In firmware version 7.19.4:

The unit will boot with 2TB, 1TB, or 8GB cards.

1TB and 8GB cards were mounted properly.

Two different 2TB cards were not mounted.

When I hot-swapped an unmounted 2TB with an 8GB card, the router rebooted. After the reboot, the 8GB card was mounted.

All tests were done with exFAT-formatted cards.

I will greatly appreciate any help you can provide. I bought the RUT976 explicitly because it supports 2TB microSD cards.

What voltage does the 2TB SD Card run at?

If it’s 3.3v it should be OK if it’s fixed at 1.8v then it’s incompatible i think.

Try googling “how to find out what voltage an sd card needs”

Card Type Power Supply (VDD) Signaling Voltage
Standard/SDHC/SDXC 3.3V (2.7-3.6V) 3.3V (Default)
UHS-I 3.3V (2.7-3.6V) 1.8V or 3.3V
UHS-II 3.3V & 1.8V 1.8V
MicroSD Express 3.3V & 1.8V (Optional 1.2V) 1.8V or 1.2V

Thank you. The card is a SanDisk Extreme that runs at standard voltage. Initializing at 3.3v and running at 1.8v if necessary. The 1TB card, which mounted, is a SanDisk Extreme Plus, and it imitializes and runs at the exact same voltage.

I have no knowledge of your RUT976 myself and the only other thing i can think of maybe possibly is that perhaps you may have to download and install an additional package to enable support for 2TB cards. Just suggesting, i don’t know. Wouldn’t know where to start on that one.

I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will step in and help further shortly.

Greetings,

Could you plese try to use our bootloader menu to update the device firmware and see if that resolves the issue. This is a last resort recovery option, and it is used to differentiate between software and hardware problems. Instructions for it can be found here: RUT976 Device Recovery Options - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Thank you, I’ll try. However, I previously loaded 7.21 and any SD card that was inserted caused the machine not to boot. And when the card was removed, the machine still wouldnt boot. I needed to do a hard reset and that process lasted 20 minutes. I moved the body of this post to network solutions->issues with the revised subject of RUT976 – 2TB microSD not mounting; 7.21 causes boot hang. While the post has been moved, the thread of responses to the previous subject remain. Please let me know if you’d still like me to try using the bootloader and i will. Sorry for any confusion. Also, to clarify, the unit is accessible now. I am able to upgrade the firmware through the GUI.

Greetings,

Let’s continue our communication on this topic. Please try flashing the firmware through the bootloader menu by following the instructions I provided earlier. I was unable to replicate the issue on another RUT9XX series device running firmware version 7.21. However, I currently do not have access to a 2 TB SD card for testing. Because of that, I will need to forward this case to our research and development department for further feedback. But before that, I would like to know the results of the bootloader update.

I will. Thank you.

By the way, it’s possible that I only tried to boot version 7.21 with the 2TB drive inserted. I wrote this post right after I experimented with 7.19.4. The experimentation with 7.21 were a couple of days prior. I will use the bootloader to load 7.20.3 first, since i havent tried that yet, and get back to you.

I used the bootloader to load 7.20.3. As with 7.19.4, the 1 TB drive mounted, and the 2 TB drive didn’t. I then tried to use the bootloader to load 7.21. For some reason, the connection timed out. I tried multiple times. I don’t think I did anything differently than with 7.20.3. So I needed to load 7.21 via the admin GUI. This time, the unit booted with both the 1 TB and 2 TB disks. As with 7.20.3, the 1 TB drive mounted, but the 2 TB drive didn’t.

Greetings,

Thank you for the clarification. My colleague has forwarded the information to our R&D department. Once we receive an update, we will get back to you on this topic: RUT976 – 2TB microSD mount failure (7.19.4) and boot instability (7.21)
