RMS service locked to LTE / WWAN / mob1s1a1 connection

Firmware & Device info

  • RUTX11
  • 7.10.2

Summary

For almost an entire week, one of my RUTX11 devices was consuming LTE data despite its wired WAN interface functioning normally, and Failover configured correctly. This happened after last week’s RMS outage. The device recovered, but I believe that the RMS connection remained established via LTE due to NAT/conntrack. This caused many hundreds of MB of data to be consumed per day, leading to my data cap getting breached prematurely.

Do I need to set up a cron job that resets rms_mqtt every hour or something? I don’t know what to do here. This is not sustainable!

I may have found the source of this traffic and come up with a workaround. After 48-72 hours to confirm the fix, I will share my results.

Hello,

Apologies for the delayed response and for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

Currently, there is an issue with devices prioritizing the IPv6 network. For instance, if your mobile connection uses IPv6 and your wired WAN does not, the device will prioritize the mobile internet connection.

As a temporary solution, we recommend the following:

  1. Configure both mobile WAN and wired WAN to use IPv6.
  2. Alternatively, remove IPv6 and configure both interfaces to use IPv4 only.

Our developers are actively working on resolving this issue, and we appreciate your understanding and patience in the meantime.

Best regards,

I’m aware of the IPv6 issue, but in this case that is NOT the cause of the problem. The device in question already had IPv6 disabled across the board. I don’t know the original cause of the problem yet, but during my research I came up with a script-based workaround that has been working.

I have shared this info and the script with support last week, and there is a ticket open still on it (#417417)
