Hi,
I have a Teltonika OTD500, Firmware is OTD5_R_00.07.15.1
As SIM 1 (real SIM) I have a working SIM card with working internet
I would now like to add an eSim. However, this is only possible in the Teltonika GUI if I set SIM3 (=eSIM) as the active card
Then I drag the QR code into the GUI, it is recognised
Now the download or activation fails because the SIM3 eSIM does not (yet) have a working Internet connection
If I switch to the working SIM card (SIM1) immediately after configuring the eSIM, the eSIM retrieval does also not work.
In my opinion, the problem is, that you can not configure eSIM profiles without activating eSIMs as active connection. I do not have a WAN backup connection, but mobile phones can also activate eSIMs via normal SIM connections.
And if you think about it: Managing Profiles has actually nothing todo with make eSIMs the active connection. It’s just a question of registering potential eSIMs, not if you want to activate one of them.
When you choose eSIM to be the primary, the modem switches to the eSIM to establish the connection, and as the connection is not possible, the activation does not happen.
To clarify, mobile phones usually have a small ammount of eSIM integrated data, therefore it functions differently. We, unfortunately do not have such functionality yet.
In your instance, you would need a wired wan connection to activate the eSIM.
I think the OTD500 is a super cool product, but this implementation of eSIM is a real drawback and honestly it totally disappoints me, as you would not expect this limitation.
It is logical to me that you need an alternative internet connection to enable an eSIM, but it’s not comprehensible why this can not be another mobile connection.
Can you please provide step by step guide of how to add eSIM profile? I mean detailed step by step instructions of how to configure internet access through LAN connection (from the laptop for example) and how to add eSIM. It seems that is not working at all…
I’d like to provide some clarification regarding the current implementation of eSIM functionality on Teltonika Networks devices.
The OTD500 device is equipped with a single mobile modem. This means that only one mobile connection can be active at a time. When attempting to activate an eSIM, the device must use that single modem both to establish an internet connection and to activate the eSIM itself.
However, since the eSIM is not yet activated, it cannot provide a working internet connection. As a result, an external internet source-typically via a wired WAN connection is required during the activation process. This allows the device to access the internet and download the necessary eSIM profile.
For comparison, we do offer devices with dual mobile modems, such as the RUTX12. In such cases, one modem can maintain an active mobile connection using a physical SIM, while the second modem is used to activate the eSIM. This dual-modem setup enables simultaneous internet access and eSIM activation without the need for a wired WAN connection.
I hope this helps clarify how eSIM activation works across different Teltonika devices.
I completely understand that the current implementation may not be ideal, and I’ve shared your feedback with our Research & Development team for consideration in future improvements.
To get started, simply connect a LAN cable from the device that provides your internet connection to your router. This will allow your router to establish an internet connection through that source.
To confirm that your internet connection is active, please follow these steps:
Go to WEBUI System
Select Maintenance
Click on Troubleshoot
Under Diagnostics, try pinging 8.8.8.8
If you see that packets are being sent and received successfully, your internet connection is up and running.
Once your connection is confirmed, you can proceed with the eSIM activation by following the guide provided above.
I can also confirm, that implementation of the eSIM bootstrap profile (provides an eSIM with its default SIM credentials for connecting to a mobile network so that it can establish a connection for devices when first activated) Is already on the agenda for our RnD team.
Keep an eye our for future updates.
Looks like they started rolling this “bootstrap” feature with RUT241, as I can’t find any other device that has product change notification with bootstrap:
