Wireless Mesh configuration example doesn't work

Hello,

Referring your Wireless Mesh configuration example - Wireless Mesh configuration example - Teltonika Networks Wiki

I’m having issue to access internet from the MESH Node AP routers and the wifi clients attached to the MESH AP nodes. In the example you tested icmp successfully from the MESH Gateway plus AP router to other MESH AP routers. However, please try it from the MESH AP nodes. I could not ping the MESH Gateway+AP from the MESH AP nodes and internet as well.

I’m using RUTX11 for both MESH Gatewy+AP and MESH AP node. Firmware is RUTX_R_00.07.08.3 (latest, mass prod).

Reffering a youtube howto,

How to Set Up Wi-Fi Mesh with Teltonika Networks RUTX11 & RUT956

In this example, MESH Node’s LAN interface is DHCP and it works fine.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out.

I have tested both wireless mesh configuration examples from our Wiki and YouTube on the newest RUTX_R_00.07.09.1 firmware version. The configurations are identical, and after completing the setup, I was able to successfully ping the mesh gateway (LAN IP: 192.168.1.2) and Wi-Fi clients connected to it from the mesh node (LAN IP: 192.168.1.1). Additionally, the mesh node router and its connected clients had wireless internet access from the gateway and were able to reach the internet. Initially, the mesh node did not have internet access, but after rebooting the node, everything worked as expected.

Here are a few important points to check:

  • Ensure that both the mesh gateway and mesh node have the same Radio settings for AP and Mesh modes (e.g., 2.4 GHz).
  • Verify that both devices are using the same 11th radio channel and that the transmit power is set to 100%.
  • Make sure DHCPv4 is enabled on the mesh node’s LAN interface.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions or need further assistance.

Best regards,

Hello Martynas,

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

Here are the screenshots from both the instructions regarding Mesh Node LAN interface setting.

BTW, I’m using 5Ghz band. Is that OK?

Hello,

Thank you for your patience, and I apologize for my delayed response.

I appreciate you sharing the screenshots regarding the Mesh Node LAN interface settings. I’d like to clarify that the tutorial you referenced was created on an older firmware version, which included an option to select the protocol as DHCP in the Network → LAN settings. In the newer firmware versions, when configuring Mesh nodes on the LAN interface, you only need to ensure that Enable DHCPv4/v6 is activated; the protocol will default to Static.

Regarding your question about using the 5 GHz band, yes, you can absolutely use it in your wireless mesh setup. While the coverage area may be smaller compared to the 2.4 GHz band, you will benefit from significantly faster internet speeds within that coverage. It’s also important to mention that when configuring the mesh on the 5 GHz radio, make sure to select the same channels (it’s recommended to use channel 36) in both the gateway and nodes.

If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Best regards,

Hello Martynas,

Thanks for the information - channel 36 is recommended for 5GHz.

I have got it working now. But just to clarify that, DHCP option should be disbled in all the Mesh AP nodes, because Mesh GW is having DHCP enabled. There should be only 1 DHCP server in the network.

One more point, I’m using RUTX11 routers both for Mesh GW and AP node and got this Mesh WLAN working in firmware version 07.04.5. Then when I updated the routers to latest firmware (mass production), all the issues started. e.g, WLAN clients couldn’t get IP from the DHCP and all the above mentioned.

I did factory reset all the devices and configured from the scratch and would like to confirm that following example in wiki works but I had to disble DHCP in Mesh nodes. Could you please have another look to the wiki instruction?

I would like to thank you bear with my silly questions. Thank you very much for your great support.

Hello,

Thank you for your detailed response and for sharing your findings. I’m glad to hear that you’ve successfully set up the wireless Mesh and resolved the issue!

I’ll review the Wireless Mesh configuration example in our wiki to ensure everything aligns with your observations. If disabling DHCP on the Mesh nodes resolves the issue as you’ve described, we will make the necessary adjustments to the instructions.

Once again I appreciate your patience and your effort in troubleshooting this setup. It’s great to hear that the issue is resolved. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any further assistance in the future.

Best regards,
