Wifi Bridge Weak Signal

Hello,

I have configured a wifi bridge connection to allow for internet connectivity to a remote modem and camera. The network diagram looks like this:

The wifi bridge does work, however the signal strength is not great enough to retrieve the images off the camera. I am looking for advise on how to improve this wifi bridge.

Wifi shot: 105m clear line of sight
Wifi: 2.4ghz
Channel Width: 20mhz (could increase to 40mhz)
Gain: 100%, tried lower gain settings with no improvements
Antenna: L-com LCANLP1013 11dBi directional

Cell antenna is a large 10dBi dual band yagi: 698-960 MHz/1710-2170 MHz

  • cell antenna is approximately 1.5m away from wifi antenna. Not sure if it could interfere with with wifi antenna.

I read in the Teltonika manual the the wifi was only rated to 100m. We assumed the 11dBi directional wifi antenna would increase the overall range, but perhaps this antenna is not appropriote?

Any ideas on how to best troubleshoot this issue? Our plan B is to scrap the wifi connection and add another sim card and cell antenna to the remote station. We would like to avoid plan B if possible but it might be more cost effective at this point.

The strength of the signal you receive, depends on several factors. From your description, it sounds like the issue would more likely be due to received connection from the ISP initially. For that, I would recommend checking band locking. Check what Band the device connects to easiest (WEBUI->Status->Network->Mobile), and then band lock the device to that band. Another thing to look at will be placement. Try to put the device in best circumstances possible, and see if you can increase the signal strength.

Last option would be looking into alternative antennas. I do need to note our devices are most optimally used with our original Teltonika antennas, and haven’t been tested with third party antennas. One of our partners, however is Poynting, I would recommend looking into their portfolio.

Thank-you for the response.

We will try to lock the band to see if that improves the connection. We are able to connect to the primary RUT956 reliably with the cell connection. We are not able to reliably connect to the secondary RUT956 reliably over the wifi bridge, although we can sometimes ssh into it.

When we go to site next, we will likely try to improve the wifi connection by re-pointing and moving antenna’s around.

Do you have any recommendations for Teltonika or Poynting antennas that can manage 105m with clear line of sight. Is this distance too much?

For a 105-meter clear line-of-sight WiFi bridge connection, this distance is generally feasible with the right antennas, though it is on the longer side for typical WiFi setups. To improve reliability, directional antennas are recommended to focus the signal between the two points.

Recommendations for Teltonika and Poynting antennas:

For a 105m link, a directional panel antenna with a gain of around 9-12 dBi would help focus the signal and increase range.
Poynting: Their XPOL series (cross-polarized directional antennas) or LPDA (Log Periodic Dipole Array) antennas provide gains from 9 dBi up to 15 dBi, which can effectively cover 100+ meters with clear line of sight.

Additional tips:

  • Ensure antennas are properly aligned and secured to maintain stable pointing.
  • Use high-quality, low-loss coaxial cables to minimize signal degradation.
  • If possible, test the link with temporary antenna setups to find the best positioning before final installation.

Thanks—we were able to get out to the site last week and resolve the issue.

There was a slightly loose connection, and tightening it helped. We also swapped out the antennas, which significantly improved the signal strength.

Lesson learned: test thoroughly before installation.
