Why is TP Link MR600 slower than Teltonika RUT200

Hi, I have an old Teltonika RUT200 which needed replacing, so I bought a TP Link MR600. However this TP Link is much slower than the Teltonika which I thought had the same spec. I’ve tested them both in exactly the same situation (wired ethernet connection to my computer via TP Link hubs). We have poor mobile signal here, so have an external aerial for the router, yet the Teltonika is definitely quicker. Any ideas why? Many thanks

Good afternoon,

I think this would be a question more aimed for the TP link forums, rather than Teltonika, due to the nature of the question. As the specifications say, the devices should operate in a similar manner, however in this instance our device is working as its expected, therefore there is nothing to troubleshoot with our device.

I can see that the MR600 may be connecting on lower bands (e.g., Band 1) instead of higher-performing bands (e.g., Band 3), which limits speed. This device does not seem to have manual band locking, which in this case our device would be able to do.

Although the MR600 supports 4G+ (LTE Cat6), it may be that the device does not always achieve carrier aggregation, resulting in slower speeds 5-20 Mbps vs. expected up to 300 Mbps.

Even with an external aerial, the MR600’s modem or antenna connectors might be less efficient than ours, especially in poor signal areas. The RUT200 is known for industrial-grade LTE modems optimized for weak signals, which might explain its better throughput in your scenario.

Try updating the MR600 firmware to the latest version or consider beta firmware if available to improve band selection and carrier aggregation support.
Test with different Ethernet cables (Cat6 or better) and ensure your wired network setup is optimal.

Many thanks for your help. I’ve tried everything you have suggested and contacted TP Link for support too and have decided that your RUT200 is superior. So I am going to send back the TP Link one and order another RUT200.
I am not very technical and didn’t put in this first RUT200, so will it be easy to plug in and “play” the new one, or will I have to do lots of complicated configurations? Many thanks

Hi there,

It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. Overall, we have a Teltonika wiki page, which provides guides for majority of configurations you want to do.

Here is a Quick Setup Guide to be able to start the device efficiently : QSG RUT200 - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Hi, I’ve now bought and set up a brand new Teltonika RUT200 as advised and yet the download speeds are appalling. With my old RUT240 I get about 32Mbps download and the new one is bringing in about 5Mbps with exactly the same aerial etc. Sadly I can’t find out the exact configurations on the old one as we inherited it and don’t have the admin password. Any idea what we should do?

Hi there,

Please check what firmware version does the device have, and upgrade it to the newest. Link : RUT200 Firmware Downloads - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Also please see if all of the antennas are correctly screwed on the device. Please clarify whether you use Teltonika original antennas, or third party?

Please also try to band-lock the device. Check which band the device connects to the easiest, and in WEBUI Network → Mobile → Connection change the band to manually connect to your preffered one. More info : Band Lock - Teltonika Networks Wiki

I would also like for you to change your APN from auto, to custom. I would either need to know what mobile provider you use, or you can simply find out, what apn your mobile provider uses, and manually type it in in WEBUI. Instructions : Auto APN - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Please also try to perform a bootloader reset on the device. This unique feature allows you to perform firmware update and reflash the device, which can potentially resolve the issue. Instructions on how to do so : RUT200 Device Recovery Options - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Many thanks for your help. I have done everything apart from the Bootloader reset, which I will do later once I have read all the links you sent, so I do it properly. The speed has gone up a little to more like 8Gbps, but nothing like the old RUT240. You ask about the aerial - this is an external aerial as we have poor reception here and the internal ones are not enough. When comparing the old RUT240 with this new RUT200 we are using the external aerial for both tests. We are also doing the speedchecks with a wired ethernet cable to get best speeds as we rarely use the Wifi.
Is there anyway I can access the settings on the old RUT240 without the access password? I obviously don’t want to reboot it and lose its settings as they get us a much better speed. Many thanks

Also, I don’t know if its relevant, but the upload speed is quite high compared to the download. Ie at the moment the download is 6.5Mbps and the upload is 5.5Mbps

Hi, I’ve just done the Bootloader Reset as instructed and sadly it’s not improved the speed. The speed does vary a bit anyway, but it is generally around 5Mbs on the Download and the Upload is the same at around 5Mbs. When I put the old RUT240 back on, the Download is 18.5Mbs and the Upload is 1.38Mbs. Which as you see the Download is much better, but the Upload is worse.
I look forward to hearing back from you with what to do next. Many thanks for your help in this.
