Hi, sorry and probably a very basic question. I use a RUTX50 in my campervan. What is the ‘Camper’ mode in RUTX50 RUT OS app and will it benefit me? Thanks in advance.
Hi…
Maybe his url answer your question
https://teltonika-networks.com/use-cases/transportation/5g-router-for-rv-internet-camping-wi-fi
My understanding from this article is that it allows you to connect to captive portals such as you might find at a campsite and use that as your primary internet in the campervan rather than your SIM based data.
However, in my experience campsite WiFi is generally a lot slower than I get with my RUTX50 so I’m not sure it’s worth bothering with.
I didn’t know there was an app, so I installed it and also added the ‘TravelMate’ package on the router, but the app won’t let me select the ‘Camper’ mode despite the fact that the required package is present.
Don’t think I’ll bother with this ‘feature’ any further as I don’t have a use case for it, plus it doesn’t seem to work so…
Thought it was nice that the app had upload and download speeds on it, but they seemed low. Ran a speedtest (from an app on a laptop rather than a browser) and those were much better than the app was reporting.
Some very limited functionality, and seems to always have issues connecting to the router. Seems like the app could benefit from a little bit more work but has the potential of being useful. Not sure it’s quite there yet…
WiFi… Can be a chalenge… We can talk about WiFi4, WiFi5 or …
There is a lot of issues that can generate some degradation of WiFi4, like Microwave.
And..
WiFi5, it is nice… but… not good for medium or long distances.
Maybe… Teltonika engineers, reading this post, will think in some way to do this or have a sugestion to have this, using another app?
Hi,
I was trying to configure my own device using the TravelMate package but wasn’t really able to see any huge improvement while using the “Camper” mode.
The package itself seems to be poorly documented on the OpenWRT GitHub page, since it is a package that was not developed by Teltonika. I wasn’t able to find any additional information about it, as it is not even mentioned. Apparently, the “Camper” mode should enhance internet connectivity for RVs by optimizing the use of available networks, such as campground Wi-Fi and cellular data.
I really did try my best to find more information regarding this, and testing the functionality out didn’t bear much results to help me answer your question, but it looks like its main purpose is to allow the router to automatically switch between different internet sources to maintain a stable connection. For instance, it can prioritize connecting to a campground’s Wi-Fi network when available and switch to cellular data when the Wi-Fi signal is weak or unavailable.
Hopefully, that answers your question at least partially.

Hi,
TravelMate package or in WebUI “Redirect captive portal” option is used to connect to public access points with captive portals(hotspot). Without it you would not get internet connection from these access points.
Hi, @A900ss
The “TravelMate” package is either pre-installed or can be installed via the package manager on most of the Teltonika Networks devices. This can be checked by going to Network > Wireless > Edit > Selecting the Mode as Multi AP > Additional Settings if you see the option Redirect to Captive portal that means that TravelMate is pre-installed. Alternatively, you can create a new Wireless interface, connect as a client, and head to the same Additional settings.
If none of these can be found, you can also check if TravelMate is available for download under System > Package Manager or in the package downloads.
Now, regarding the TravelMate & Camper mode.
Quoting @Dainius regarding the Travelmate package:
TravelMate package or in WebUI “Redirect captive portal” option is used to connect to public access points with captive portals(hotspot). Without it, you would not get internet connection from these access points.
Now for the “Camper” mode - I’ve dug a bit deeper with this and would like to correct myself on my previous statement. When you choose the “Camper” mode, it automatically enables the aforementioned “Redirect captive portal” option when trying to connect to a wireless interface.
Regards,
M.
The ‘Camper’ mode in the RUTX50 RUT OS app is a set of pre-configured settings optimized for use in mobile environments, such as RVs or campers, to ensure reliable and efficient internet connectivity. Whether this will benefit you depends on your specific needs and how you use your RV or camper.
