I was excited to come across the anouncement that eSim capable devices like my RUT241 were to be equiped with an eSim bootstrap profile in order to download and activate an eSim profile without first connecting the router to the internet via its ethernet port or through a wifi connection.
Alas, the eSim bootstrap profile is only present on newly manufactured devices, and is removed once the first eSim profile is downloaded and activated. Bummer, thats usesless for me. If the use of eSims is to be promoted by carriers, bootstrap profiles should be available any time, surely there are ways to limit the use of the associated 10MB to only eSim downloading and activating. Question: can i download and activate an eSIm profile via an already active eSim profile on my RUT241? I know i can’t via the physical simcard SIM1, but can i for instance download and activate a second eSIM profile via the active first eSIM profile?
Bootstrap profile does not have any special functionality and simply acts as an initial eSIM profile, over which you can download your eSIM profile from your ISP. After it is used to load your eSIM profile, the bootstrap profile no longer has any use (since it has a low amount of data available, and the router has additional limitations limiting traffic while it is in use)
Yes, you can download a new eSIM profile from an existing mobile connection over any eSIM profile.
