Using TRM500 directly via TypeC - RJ45 dongle

I am planning to buy the TRM500 and use it for the following use-case.

Connect the TRM500 via a Type-C dongle which has power input (via a power-bank) and a RJ45 connector.
This RJ45 connector will be connected either to a router which is set to DHCP internet connection or a Macbook. Will I be able to connect to the internet with this setup?

Good afternoon,

You can connect the TRM500 via a USB Type-C dongle that provides power and an RJ45 Ethernet port. The TRM500 will provide internet access over cellular to the host device (e.g., a router or MacBook). The RJ45 port on the dongle will be used by the host device for network connectivity, typically to connect to a router or other Ethernet network. This setup will allow internet connectivity as long as the host device supports the TRM500 modem interface and the router is configured for DHCP internet access.

Thanks for the reply Arturas.

What do you mean by this, is the router supposed to support anything more than a DHCP connection? Would the generic router for example ones by Unifi UCG Ultra etc be supported?

Hi there,

If you want to use the TRM500 as your internet source, you need a router that supports USB cellular modems and the TRM500 specifically, such as Teltonika’s own routers. Generic routers like UniFi UCG Ultra that do not support USB cellular modems will not work with the TRM500 connected via USB, regardless of their DHCP capabilities. The USB port, from information found online, is used only for power input, not for connecting usb modems or other data devices.

  • Won’t the TRM500 work if connected via an RJ45 dongle to a any generic router?

  • Can you suggest any Teltonika router that can be coupled with TRM500

Hi there,

It will not no, as noted above, the host device needs to have capabilities to accept internet connection via USB port.

I am unable to advise of devices for this myself, as this setup has not been tested. Maybe other forum members have more insights.

Thanks, what’s the max speed supported over the Type C?

Hi,

Cellular download speed up to 3.4 Gbps (5G)
USB Type-C interface supports data transfer rates up to 5 Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen 1)
