TRB246 Wrong Stratum

I have a setup using TRB246 (192.168.47.15).

NTP Time synchronization is off. Operator tiem sync is off.

I enabled GPS Time sync every 5 minuters.

I enable NTP time server.

NMEA sentence forwaring is on.

I DISCONNECTED the GPS cable.

when I do a NTP Query to the TRB, it returns a timestamp and stratum 1. This is a violation and effectively makes the device unusable for GPS time synchronization.

root@gandalf:/home/hans# netcat -k -l -u 192.168.47.114 8500
$GPGGA,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,*66
$GPRMC,,V,,,,,,,,,,N,V*29

The first line tells, that the GPS has no fix. The second tells, that no GPS-Timesstamp is available.

root@gandalf:/home/hans# ntpdig 192.168.47.15
2026-05-15 10:57:20.616609 (+0200) +7179.698780 +/- 0.002363 192.168.47.15 s1 no-leap

“s1” means, that the TRB246 NTP Server is claiming to be a stratum 1, even 5 minutes after GPS has been disconnected.

My expectation is taht it should return stratum16.

Greetings,

Apologies for the delayed response.

I have forwarded your inquiry to our Research and Development department. Once I receive a response from them, I will get back to you.

Greetings,

This behavior is a limitation of the current NTP server implementation. Work is currently in progress to unify the NTP server and client into a single service. Once that is complete and GPS is implemented as a proper peer, the server should start returning the correct stratum value.
