My idea is to create VPN connection that will give my PC (the machine running Teltonika RMS VPN) IP address in range that is configured on RUT241 router.
Can this be done with TAP mode?
Do I must add/change some settings on router?
Firstly, to clarify, TAP mode is designed for creating a Layer 2 (L2) network bridge between Ethernet segments, where both the VPN server and clients are part of the same LAN subnet and can directly communicate with each other’s hosts within that subnet.
Since RMS VPN TAP mode is still in beta, some limitations and unexpected behaviors can occur. For your scenario, where you wish to have an IP address from the RUT241’s LAN subnet on your PC running as a client, I would recommend using OpenVPN in TAP mode for now. OpenVPN’s bridged mode is stable, widely supported, and would allow you to achieve the desired network integration until TAP mode in RMS VPN is fully developed
For your convenience, comprehensive and practical information about configuring OpenVPN in TAP (bridged) mode is available in the links below:
Furthermore, I’ll check the current RMS VPN TAP mode more in depth, as it’s a very recently added feature that wasn’t fully tested, and as mentioned, it’s still in beta, meaning potentially there are limitations or issues that may be experienced. I’ll update you after some testing is done.
Thank you for the quick reply.
I’m aware that TAP mode is still in beta. I learned it is already available only yesterday, during a meeting with Teltonika staff, when they showed us RMS in depth.
My intention was to give feedback on this feature, so when TAP mode is out of beta, it will work correctly and will work for our scenario - Siemens LOGO remote update.
Sadly, I can’t use OpenVPN, because most of our Routers (50+) use SIM cards and don’t have static IP addresses. Besides that, I want to take advantage of RMS to be able to create VPN configurations and assign them to users, to have everything in one place.
We have a workaround for now, but I’d like to use the full potential of RMS, so please keep me informed if you make any changes to TAP mode VPN, I’ll be more than happy to help with testing.
