SLOW WIFI on RUT241

Hi, when I connect to the modem via WiFi and the modem connects to a second WiFi network, the Speedtest is about 20MB/s. When I connect directly to the second WiFi network, the Speedtest is 450-750 MB/s. So the WiFi of the modem seems very slow. I tried to change the radio settings but this made no difference. Any ideas?

Hi,

RUT241 uses Wi-Fi 4, so theoretical max speed is about 75 MB/s, so you won’t be able reach mentioned (450-750 MB/s) speeds.

So check routers with Wi-Fi 5 or 6: Teltonika Ethernet and 4G/5G Cellular Routers

To achieve better speed I would recommend if possible to connect those device with ethernet cable. If not try changing RUT241 position.

Hello @Prometheus,

Could you please let me know if lemodude’s suggestions helped, or if you still need any additional assistance?

Best regards,

Hi, the signal strength is 91%, so thats not the issue. The RUT 241 is advertised at 150MB/s down and 75MB/s up, serving 50 connections. I purchased this for an IoT application for which the specified speed is fine. But 20MB/s is too slow.
There were previous reports of the same issue with no resolution. Please update your marketing material as your claims seem incorrect. Where can I return the units purchased?

Good afternoon,

Please check what firmware version does the device have, and upgrade it to the newest. Link : RUT241 Firmware Downloads - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Please see if all of the antennas are correctly screwed on the device. Please clarify whether you use Teltonika original antennas, or third party?

Please also try to band-lock the device. Check which band the device connects to the easiest, and in WEBUI Network → Mobile → Connection change the band to manually connect to your preffered one. More info : Band Lock - Teltonika Networks Wiki

I would also like for you to change your APN from auto, to custom. I would either need to know what mobile provider you use, or you can simply find out, what apn your mobile provider uses, and manually type it in in WEBUI. Instructions : Auto APN - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Also please follow the above advice in regards to the device placement. Try it outside, with optimal circumstances at least for testing purposes.

I also wanted to clarify, if you have tried providing an internet connection to the device via Cable, as @lemondude suggested, if you see any difference in speeds.

Regards,

Arturas

Hi Arturas. Unfortunately you gave a cut and paste reply and did not read my description. As stated the test was WiFi only, so most of your reply is not relevant.

Yes, we used the latest firmware which also has a bug as it keeps indicating that you need to upgrade the firmware and when you do, it confirms that the latest version is installed.

I did a WiFi scan, selected channel 6 and the unit then overrided my selection and changed to channel 1. I changed the channel to 40 MB/s but this did not make any difference either.

And you did not indicate where I can return the units we purchased.

Hi there,

You have only mentioned that you connect to the modem via wifi. You haven’t mentioned how you supply internet connection to the device itself. As the default way to do this is via Sim card, that is the troubleshooting we advise.

You have not advised me what antennas you use and whether you checked whether they are attached. If it’s wifi, can you try to connect to that wifi network directly, let’s say with your phone? Do you get much better values?

You have also not advised me about product placement.

No information on whether you have tried supplying internet to the router via cable either.

Please advise and we can continue with the troubleshoot.

You can return your devices to your distributor, wherever they were purchased.

Regards,

Arturas

Laptop to WiFi AP: 450MB/s up, 750MB/s down (using WiFi)
Phone to WiFi AP: 435MB/s up and down (using WiFi)
Laptop to RUT 241 WiFi, RUT241 to WiFi AP: 20MB/s up and down (using WiFi)
Distance from laptop to RUT241: 300mm

The RUT 241 has only one WiFi antenna port. I am using the standard stubby WiFi antenna
