Seems to only be possible to choose 3G Only and 4G Only but no 5G Only
My thoughts are that this is a bad idea anyway. Because if a 5G connection isnât possible for whatever reason or the signal is so poor that a 4G connection would be better, youâd have no access to the internet at all!!!
You can, i understand, ban bands that you donât want the router to use, but again this can be a bad idea if you are mobile. The router will connect you to the best service available at any given moment negotiated between the network provider and your router and if 5G is problematic for whatever reason youâll get a 4G connection and so on.
So if youâre not getting a 5G connection, it could be that your position in relation to the masts available is not good enough to support a stable 5G connection. Where is the router? Is it in a mobile vehicle or static in a building?
Are you using the antennas provided indoors or inside a vehicle, or are you using exterior antennas in some way?
5G still sits âon topâ of 4G in large areas, called 5G âNSAâ (Non Stand Alone).
â5G SAâ (Stand Alone) is coming more and more but still far away from âeverywhere availableâ.
And until then the underlying 4G is mandatory.
We have a problem where it chooses 4G instead of 5G and the performance is not good enough on 4G which makes it useless. As you already have options for 3G and 4G Iâm guessing it is not to much job to add 5G only.
Also 5G SA is already being deployed in the enterprise world with private 5G networks.
Iâm sure someone more knowledgeable will post a reply. For me though, you are getting / given a 4G connection because a stable 5G connection is not possible, perhaps.
What antennas are you using?
How are you using the device? Indoors, in a vehicle or in a mobile vehicle?
Well not really, the 4G connection is shaky with bad receive strength and the 5G connection is good but the device chooses the 4G. I cant think of any reason to why not have a 5G only mode, itâs up to the user if they want to use that mode or not. And with Private 5G SA coming more to enterprise world it will good to skip everything old that has to do with 3G and 4G.
You could help us further by describing how you are setup, indoors outdoors or in a vehicle for example.
Is your SIM a domestic or business SIM? This matters.
And you can lock specific bands for your needs:
Itâs an old 4G network on 1800mhz and new 5G SA on 3720mhz. Eventually it will only be 5G but currently both are up with different coverage. This is not how national operators build it and there I agree that underlying 4G will be mandatory for many years to come but due to several reasons enterprise customers will build their private networks different.
We already solved it by configuring n78 on 5G and a band that isnât used on 4G so it works but a cleaner option for the future would be 5G only mode. If not only for the sake to just remove all old 3G and 4G scannings, handshakes etc.
