RUTX12 set priority for two modems

Hi, I’ve installed the RUTX12 on my boat and have two sim cards from different cellular providers. The mobile coverage from each provider differs greatly as I move along the coastline, and I was hoping the router would be able to automatically select the sim card/modem which is providing the best signal at the time. Is this even possible ? The Failover & Load Balancing functions don’t seem to cover this. If its not possible, then how do I manually select to only use the secondary modem when I’ve got poor signal on the primary ? Many thanks, Paul

Hello,

Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, on the RUTX12, there is no SIM switch function that would allow the router to automatically switch from SIM1 to SIM2 when the signal is weak, as the RUTX12 has two separate modems. You’ve mentioned that the Load Balancing function doesn’t seem to cover this need. In this case, the only recommendation I can offer is to try enabling the Low Signal Reconnect function, which can be found under Network → Mobile → Connection.

As for manually selecting the secondary modem when the primary has poor signal, there is no specific configuration to switch modems based on signal strength automatically.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or need further assistance.

Best regards,

Thank you for the reply. I’ve only got one principal connection to the router on the boat, so managing loads from multiple local connections isn’t the issue for me. My main concern is utilising the best mobile coverage possible wherever I happen to be along the coastline. I see that the RUTX11 model supports “sim switching” which looks like the functionality I’m looking for. I assume the RUTX12 doesn’t have this feature ?

Hi Martynas,

There are videos online showing speed comparisons with using single sim and then both sims set up in load balancing mode, the latter seeing in improve in speeds.

From your response you indicated this might not be the case? Can you share how load balancing works more technically?

Documentation online appears to show load balancing by simply separating VLANs from each other and attaching to each own SIM:

This contradicts the video showing an improvement in speeds unless there is somewhere else where a multi-wan config across VLANs could be set up somehow.

New to Teltonika products so am not sure what’s available.

Yes, as I mentioned in my previous comment, the RUTX12 does not have the SIM switch feature because SIM1 and SIM2 are managed by separate modems. However, an alternative solution you can try is the Low Signal Reconnect function. This feature resets the modem connection when the signal falls below a specified threshold, which could help ensure you maintain the best available connection.

Best regards,
