RUTX12 load balancing when only 1 LAN port connect

I am using a RUTX12 device for our robot with 2 SIMs. Only 1 LAN port is connected to 1 computer, and the three other ports are not used.
I want to ask if the function Load Balancing is activated in this case? Or the Load Balancing function only works when multiple LAN ports are connected?

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry.

The Load Balancing function is not activated by default and, in your current setup, where only one computer is connected to a single LAN port, Load Balancing would not be active.

However, Load Balancing can be configured to function when multiple LAN clients are connected. This can be done by referencing their specific LAN/Source IP addresses or through different VLANs. For more details on configuring Load Balancing, please refer to the following wiki example: Load Balancing Rules/Policies Examples.

Best Regards,

Thank you for your answer.

Coming back to my application, my main purpose for using a Teltonika device with 2 SIMs is to maintain the Internet connection in the weak cellular signal area.

Does the Load Balancing function help to improve connection in this case? Or do I just need to buy a Teltonika device that has only a Failover function?

Hello,

Apologies for a delayed response.

In your case, Load Balancing can improve overall data throughput when there are multiple simultaneous client connections by distributing the traffic across both SIM cards. However, it won’t necessarily enhance a single connection’s stability in weak signal areas. You can find more details on how Load Balancing works and its use cases here.

For maintaining a constant internet connection in weak signal areas, the Failover function is more suitable. It ensures that if the primary WAN connection (e.g., mob1s1a1) becomes unavailable, the router automatically switches to the secondary WAN source to maintain uninterrupted connectivity. The Teltonika RUTX12 supports this functionality, and you can learn more about its setup and configuration here.

Best Regards,

Thank you for your response. I will configure the Failover function as your suggestion.

Best regards,
