Hi I have some ships using RUTX12 router with 4G Sim on MOB1 and Starlink on WAN. We operate in coastal zone where 4G signal is poor, and would like to failover to Starlink more readily. However we want it to use 4G whilst in-port where signal is good. Can i make a geofence rule to switch to WAN. Or, is there another signal strength rule i can set for failover?
Thanks, Andrew
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out.
Failover might not be the most suitable option for your case, as it operates by switching from the primary WAN source (e.g., mob1s1a1) to the secondary WAN source (e.g., wired Starlink) only when the primary connection is completely unavailable. Unfortunately, there is no signal strength rule in the failover settings that would allow switching based on mobile signal quality.
For your specific situation, I would recommend exploring GPS Geofencing as an alternative setup. This can be configured to switch between your WAN sources based on the ship’s geographical position. Here’s how it could work:
- Create Geofencing Instances:
-
Instance 1: When leaving a specified zone (latitude, longitude, radius), switch to a profile where Starlink (wired WAN) is configured as the primary internet source (metric 1).

-
Instance 2: When entering a specified zone, switch to a profile where 4G mobile WAN is set as the primary internet source.
Additionally, you might need to set up multiple geofencing instances to cover your coastal area if required. Each geofencing instance can have unique longitude, latitude, and radius parameters to define the zones where you want the routing to change.
If you have further questions or need assistance with setting up geofencing, please feel free to reach out.
