RUTX10: lost access and factory reset not working

Hello,

This router has been working like a charm for months.

But recently, I realised I could not connect to the WebUI anymore. Strange…
Scanning it shows no open port, so no more SSH, HTTP, HTTPS…

Worse, I have tried all ways to reset it:

  • tried to keep the factory reset button for 12 seconds while it works : nothing happens (4 sec press makes it reboot, however) ;
  • tried to get to the bootloader menu as indicated in the manual : the LED blinks as expected, but then nothing works : I cannot reach anything at 192.168.1.1.

Note that in all cases, it still reboots with all my old settings as if I did nothing.

So it’s still serving WiFi, it’s just that I totally lost control of it and cannot recover it.
Basically it seems to be bricked.

Besides I have the TRB140 running without any issue.

It seems to be a serious issue, maybe hardware ? Or am I missing something ?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards.

Did you try to hold the reset button a bit longer than 12 seconds?

Of course, several times. I will try again though.

I have made some progress on debugging.

The actual issue is not with the reset process itself.

By chance, I found that if I plug any Ethernet port, all the TCP/IP stack of the router shuts down : no more ping, no more WebUI, SSH, etc.
Of course, it becomes impossible to administrate in, either from cable connection or wireless.

Plug out all port, reconnect WiFi, and then I can connect to the admin interface again.

Again, just plug on Ethernet port, and everything shuts down again.

It is very weird, I had never seen such a thing before. At least not before RUTX_R_00.07.07.3 firmware version.

Do you have any idea of what could be going on? FIrmware or hardware/electric power issue ?

I just tried to downgrade to RUTX_R_00.07.07.1, but same issue. So I am going back to RUTX_R_00.07.07.8.

Can I get some support on this please ?

Hi phocean,
the only idea that I have is an IP address collision
between your router IP and something in your LAN.

Hello,

As timelapsesystems mentioned, it looks like an IP collision. There might be a service running on the connected device that is causing interference, such as another DHCP server. If this is not the issue, then it is most likely a hardware or electrical problem, as you suggested. Additionally, this could be PoE interference if the device is connected via any of the planned cables.

Best regards,

Thank you.

Yes I had checked this but it’s unrelated because the ARP cache of my computer always shows the same MAC address.

In case of conflict it would be 2 IPs for the same MAC address.

Moreover scanning the IP with nmap reports no host, which non only means that no services are open, but the entire network stack of the device is down.

I am going to claim the warranty I think.

To me it’s more a hardware issue, maybe underpowering caused by a defective component.

Hi phocean,
you could be right. I’ve got an “El cheapo” LTE router
which I sometimes use “on the road” and if I just plug
a LAN cable into the first port on the router the whole
LAN somehow shuts down, although there’s nothing
connected to the other end of the cable. I don’t care
because I use just the Wireless on this unit but…
strange things happen

Hi, I’ve the same problem with the RUTX10, the hard reset button doesn’t work ! How to solve it ?

Hello @laurentw,

Have you tried accessing your device via the bootloader? Here is a wiki page with instructions for that and other device recovery options: RUTX10 Device Recovery Options.
