RUTX10 - DNS registering

Hello,

We are using multiple RUTX10 (with latest firmware) in an OT infrastructure mostly for segregation.
We have our own DHCP and DNS Server (Windows Based) on the IT side.
We would like to automatically register the DNS name of RUTX10 while requesting DHCP address. The same way Microsoft Windows OS is doing.
Apparently with DHCP Option 81 it would be possible ?
Using bind-nsupdate would also be an possibility ?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Is this similar to what you’re looking for?

This looks to be working with both the option 81 being in place and without it.

If you could clarify, it would be great,
M.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.
In your case I suppose you are trying to ping from the LAN when your computer is placed on the same subnet ?
Our devices are not connected directly to the internet but internally. So the receive DHCP address from our infrastructure’s DHCP.
In my case I would like to be able to ping the WAN of RUTX10.

I hope this helps…

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

We’ve re-tested this by pinging from the RUTX11 LAN to the RUTM30 WAN:

Looks to be working as intended without any issues. Are you able to test this with your current configuration that you’ve mentioned?

Regards,
M.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.
Can you tell me a bit more about your configuration, please ?

  • DNS server of your “WAN” infrastructure (Microsoft ?) : Who is resolving RUTM30.lan to 192.168.1.100 ?
  • Hostname (with domain) of your RUTM30
  • Firmware version of both ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello,

Firmware versions were both the latest (at the time, I think they were 7.14.3); currently, the latest is 7.16.1

Hostname, as seen in the screenshot, is RUTM30.lan, which is the default - this can be edited under System → Administration → General, here’s a link: RUTX10 Administration - Teltonika Networks Wiki

The DNS server of our WAN infrastructure is the WAN gateway. Let’s say, for example your device has a LAN IP of 192.168.1.1 - once you connect it to a different router with the LAN IP 192.168.10.1 and you get the WAN IP of 192.168.10.55, then your DNS server would be the 192.168.10.1 device.

M.
