RUTX09 LEDs stopped working after firmware upgrade

I hadn’t upgraded my RUTX09 for years; it’s been in bridged mobile mode in my basement connected to a UniFi Security Gateway, working without issue. Now that I switched my mobile provider and got a new SIM card, I decided to factory reset it since I had no significant configurations in it.

The factory reset succeeded and I was able to use the Web UI to download and install the latest system firmware. It is now at RUTX_R_00.07.06.6. However, as a result of this, all of the mobile-related status LEDs have stopped working. They do not light up at all during bootups, resets, anything. Things I’ve tried since:

  • Toggling the indication LED setting in the web UI on and off.
  • Booting the device via the web UI and short presses of the reset button
  • Another full factory reset
  • Re-flashing the firmware via the special boot-time web UI
  • Upgrading the modem firmware

The internet connection itself is working fine. The Ethernet port LEDs work normally. The PWR LED constantly blinks all the time — I suppose this is normal, since all the functions of the device seem to work…?

Anything more I can try? Since the LEDs are used for signal strength and various other indication purposes, it would be nice to get them working, obviously.

Hello,

If your RUTX09 has been serving as a connecting router in bridge mode for several years, there’s a chance that the LEDs may have stopped working.

Here’s how you can check if the LEDs are still functional: Navigate to the router’s WebUI, go to System → Administration → General, and find the “LED indication” section. Turn the “Enable” slider off. Ensure that all LEDs are off; this might require a device reboot. Then, turn the slider back on. If the LEDs don’t light up again, it’s likely a failure of the LEDs.

Hi,

I have a RUTX09 and updated also to the latest firmware RUTX_R_00.07.06.6.
After that I made also the update for the modem firmware to the latest version “from server”
And yes I got the same behavior to my router.
The power led is blinking and the lan and wan leds are working.
All other leds are off.
I made a factory reset a firmware downgrade and upgrade again, but nothing helps.
It looks like the modem firmware update is the problem, but I can’t downgrade the modem.
I tested the failover funktion and I saw, that the modem 2 is not working. Looks like that is the problem.
It’s like the modem firmware update of modem 2 is not done properly.
Does somebody has any idea?

Thank you!
Peter

Given that a) the LEDs worked perfectly just before the firmware update, and b) @zwillingpeter has the same issue, it’s looking like a firmware bug and not a hardware fault.

In addition, this problem started for me after the main firmware update but BEFORE updating the modem firmware, so the modem firmware is not the cause either.

Hi,

I experienced exactly the same problem with my RUTX11. Working fine before FW-upgrade (i told myself afterwards; “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it”…)

only LED’s working are the flashing PWR-led and the LED’s next to the ethernet connectors.

there seems to be some issue with the current FW-update

Hope this gets resolved!
Gerhard

Hello,

Thank you for letting me know about this issue. Our R&D department is currently working on a similar problem that occurred recently. They are addressing it, and since it involves the same part related to firmware (LEDs), it should resolve the issue you’re experiencing. The solution is expected to be included in the upcoming firmware releases. If you still encounter this problem in future releases, please reach out to us again.

Best regards,

Marijus
