Hello, I am using the RUTM10 as my home router and I have this problem of HTTPS traffic being lost somewhere.
All other forms of traffic seem to work fine (ICMP pings work, speeds are as they should be, voice communication also works fine etc.). The main issue is when browsing web pages. It looks as if the request is sent (after clicking a link in a webpage) but the response never comes back (it loads and loads until timeout).
I have experience with networking equiment and tried to narrow down the issue but failed to.
I tried:
Adjusting WAN interface parameters
Adjusting LAN interface parameters
Updating firmware
Custom DNS
Factory reset
Adjusting firewall zones
Automatic reboots every night
On a related note (I think this might be relavent): I can’t disable SYN flood protection. As soon as I click “Save & Apply” in the Firewall->Attack Prevention window I get an error without any text:
Also, on multiple occasions, I have seen the router’s CPU usage skyrocket up to 1.74 or around there. This does not seem normal to me.
Has anyone ever encoutered something like this? How would I even start to diagnose this issue? Does anyone have any recomendations? Please let me know, cause this issue is really frustrating. I am working from home and constant need of manually reloading webpages after timeout is really frustrating cause for my work I need to browse webpages often.
To be honest, I’ve noticed the same issue with Internet drops. First I thought it’s TP-Link AX53 which works as Access Point, but now I see that it’s not only me who has the same problem.
This problem in my case often occurs when my girlfriend scrolls reels on Instagram on her phone, or even on my PC (which is connected directly to RUTM10) when scrolling shorts on YT - it shows an error that I’m not connected to Internet.
The problem only occurs when I’m using connection through RUTM. When I’m connected over WiFi to ISP router, everything works fine. I’ve even disconnected all other devices from RUTM, and left only my PC. Problem persists.
My RUTM10 is on firmware RUTM_R_00.07.11.4.
And in my case I was able to turn off “Enable SYN flood protection” - It doesn’t solved the problem.
I’m considering firmware downgrade (if it’s possible ofc) to test if it’s only problem with fw or hardware itself.
In my case I use only Google DNS.
I tried Cloudflare, from my ISP, AdGuard DNS - the same behavior.
I tried downgrading firmwares step by step down to RUTM_R_00.07.11 - the same behavior.
The funniest thing is, that I’ve changed my RUTM10 to borrowed RUTX09 (RUTX_R_00.07.11.3) for a while - with the same settings and everything is working fine without any issues.
We have about 8 RUTX’s 09 and 4 RUTX’s 11 at our company - not even single of them (some of them has different firmwares) has the same symptoms.
Sorry Marcelo, I don’t know what is your connection with Teltonika, but I think we should wait for reply from support team guys, which I presume are present on this forum.
Same as we are, so nothing we can do about it - in case of firmware source code check
We can’t of course exclude hardware problem too. Maybe some faulty SoC batch?
I don’t know. I’m just curious about it, because it’s a first problem like that with any RUT (RUTX09, RUTX11, RUT240, RUT200) which I used over few years. They were always a reliable piece of hardware.
This is my first RUT product, and I have to say I’m dissapointed. How is it possible that such an issue never came across the manufacturer’s radar? This is huge, the issue literally shows up every couple of minutes when browsing. Should I try to contact the manufacturer directly? To they even read these posts? It is sad because apart from the issues mentioned I would absolutely love this router.
The fact that I’m not even able to shutdown SYN flood protection and all it gives is a blank error is just insane.
I wonder if RUTX10/RUTX08/RUTM08 have the same problems. Since the X series have diffrent hardware, maybe the problem lies there.
OK,
Sorry for double post, but I want @krst to be notified on this.
I’ve done a little research, trial and error, and it seems that something went wrong with a firmware RUTM_R_00.07.10 and above. Maybe it’s related to kernel update, or some other “fix”.
I’ve downgraded my RUTM10 down to RUTM_R_00.07.09.4. Downgrade to this version, unfortunately involves loss of all settings, but as far as I can see after manually re-configuring everything, it’s working fine and web browsing seems to be more responsive (I have FFTH 600/100Mbit). Youtube works fine, without errors about no connection. Now I’m waiting for a feedback from my girlfriend who will be a tester , but so far so good.
Thank you for your insight.
I think I have discovered something as well. In the general firewall settings, I have disabled software and hardware offloading. This seems to have solved my problem regarding missing HTTPS packets (I also had problems with Youtube among other sites). With some testing, this seems to have completely solved the issue (I will conduct more testing tomorrow). The only apparent downside is the throughput of the router decreased by about 100-200Mbps (which for me is acceptable to fix this issue for the time being). I would like you to also test this if you could.
As it happens, the firmware you mentioned (RUTM_R_00.07.10) has implemented major changes to this settings as can be seen in the firmware changes log (https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/RUTM10_Firmware_Downloads). Maybe there was a bug involved in the updated firmware.
I think I narrowed the issue down to the “Hardware offloading” feature.
Yesterday I tried disabling both software and hardware offloading and the problem regarding HTTPS traffic dissapeared.
Today I turned on software offloading but left hardware offloading turned off. So far everything seems to work OK. The transfer speeds also returned to their regular values.
Like @LuziQ mentioned, RUTM10 has this isssue with firmwares beginning with RUTM_R_00.07.10. In it’s changelog we have an update to this very feature: improved throughput stability of “Hardware flow offloading”. My guess is that this “improved throughput stability” introduced a bug inside the code somewhere. That causes the router to lose some packets.
However, I was not yet able to identify why I can’t save the setting on the “attack prevention” page, and why it gives a blank error.
Please update your RUTM10 to the latest 7.12 firmware version and let me know if you encounter any issues. You can download the firmware here: RUTM10 Firmware Downloads.
Same here, the newest firmware still has this problem.
To add to that, with the latest firmware, after enabling “hardware offloading” my router crashed after a couple of minutes of testing. Wi-Fi disapeared and I was not able to use ethernet also until I manually disconnected the power from the router.
Also after opening the Network->Firewall->Attack Protection tab I get the following:
Hi,
I’ve upgraded once again to firmware RUTM_R_00.07.12 and yes, after disabling “Hardware flow offloading” everything is working fine. So how @krst wrote, there is definitely some code bug in this option, that causes RUTM crashes and packet drops.
