The failover function is designed to act as a backup for your primary WAN connection in case of failure. You can configure failover settings through the WebUI based on your preferences.
When failover is enabled, the device continuously checks the internet connection by pinging a specified server (default: 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1). If the primary interface (Smarty_Broadb…) fails (i.e., no response from the server), the system automatically switches to the secondary interface (EE_Broadband). Once the primary interface is restored (successfully responding to pings), the system reverts to using it as the main connection. You can find more details on our wiki page.
Regarding the speed test issue, could you please specify the firmware version installed on your device?
Thanks for responding. I am sorry if this is a dense question or if the answer is on the Wiki, it is not evident to me if it is. Should the secondary sim be enabled and have failover enabled? I feel like it should just have failover enabled and only the primary SIM should be enabled. As shown here: -
Failover should be enabled on all interfaces that you want to be part of the failover process. This means both the primary and backup SIM cards should have failover enabled.
Additionally, both SIM cards must be inserted and have an active internet connection to ensure a seamless transition. If the primary SIM loses connectivity, the router will switch to the backup SIM. Once the primary SIM regains internet access, the router will switch back automatically.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or need a more detailed explanation.
So my understanding is that the primary and secondary connections should both be enabled and have failover enabled, as shown, is that correct?
The configuration that defines one as primary and the other as secondary depends on which SIM is set to default in Network/Mobile/General, as shown, is that correct?
Confusingly in my implementation, SIM 1 is WAN interface 2 and SIM 2 is WAN interface 1. I swap thinks to be more logical at some point.
Apologies for the confusion. For a mobile connection to switch from SIM1 to SIM2, you need to use the SIM switch function. The failover feature only works when a device has two modems, such as the RUTX12.
To enable SIM switching:
Navigate to Network → Mobile → SIM Switch in the WebUI.
Select the conditions that will trigger the SIM switch (e.g., Weak signal, Data limit, No network, etc.).
You can enable multiple rules to ensure seamless switching when one of them is triggered.
For detailed instructions, I recommend checking the SIM switch configuration guide on our Wiki page.
