RUT956 DNS configuration

I have configured DNS as shown on these links:

When I ping a host from CLI it doesn’t work, resolution fails, for instance “ping name.domain.com”.

But nslookup works Ok with the same name:

nslookup name.domain.com DNS_IP

I’m using a RUT956 with a SIM with a private APN.

How can be this fixed?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Could you kindly clarify your desired configuration & what you’re trying to achieve? What exactly did you exactly change in the DNS & WAN settings, could you perhaps provide some screenshots for clarity sake?

Make sure to blur out any sensitive information such as your Public IP address, MAC address, serial numbers, passwords, etc.

The router comunicates through the WAN interface with a SCADA, I want to resolve hostnames such as name.mydomain.com.

This router can access to the internal network where the DNSs (Windows DC DNSs) are connected.

I know the router has access to the inside because this works: telnet IP_DNS_SERVER1 53, but if I run this command name_DNS1.domain.com 53 the answer is “bad address”.

Where do I configure DNS to resolve names like name.mydomain.com ?

I have found two pages where DNSs are configured:

  • WAN interface, it looks that there the router works like a client
  • services–>DNS, I guess that this configuration is intended to work as DNS server

I just need to configure the router as client of two DNS servers.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

If your mobile WAN interface (from the private APN) provides DNS servers via DHCP or PPP, the router will use those by default - even if you added custom ones elsewhere.
That’s why your Windows DNS servers aren’t being used by system lookups. Could you please try to force the DNS server settings by heading to the WebUI → Network → WAN → Press “edit” on the mobile interface → Advanced Settings tab → “Use custom DNS server settings” and set it to the server address:

Make sure to save and apply & please re-test whether it works as expected.

I have set the domain DNS on the field “Use custom DNS servers“ according to your instructions and the problem persists:

root@RUT956:~# ping name
ping: bad address ‘name’

root@RUT956:~# ping name.domain.com
ping: bad address ‘name.domain.com

I’m using the real domain instead of “domain.com

And this works: ping IP_DNS

64 bytes from IP_DNS: seq=0 ttl=51 time=104.446 ms

The router is a RUT956 and the firmware is updated to the current last one: RUT9M_R_00.07.17.5_WEBUI.bin
