RUT955 freezes after fw upgrade

Hello.
I have about 16 RUT955s installed. I upgraded all of them to fw 07.06.20. In three cases, it happened to me that after upgrading the fw of the device, the RUT955 freezes after some time. The only thing that lights up on it is the power LED. It is unavailable in GSM and SMS commands do not work. Ethernet is not working. The only thing that helps is turning off the power.
After restarting the power, it works OK.

Greetings,

These freezes may be related to software migration issues. Could you try upgrading the firmware through the bootloader menu on at least one device to see if the issue persists? Please note that this process will reset the device to factory default settings, but it should help in solving the issues.

You can find the instructions here:

Ideally, the device should be manually reconfigured after performing the update via the bootloader menu. However, if the configuration is large, you may download a backup file by going to System → Maintenance → Backup, before the update.

Thank you for the quick response.

I have individual devices hundreds of kilometers away across the country.
I use a private APN without internet.
I have already completed prophylaxis this year.
I currently only have RUTX11 on my desk. It works without a problem.
As soon as I get to the RUT955, I will try to upgrade via the bootloader.

All RUT955 are upgraded to version 07.06.20,, 07.06.19,, 07.06.18
I upgrade locally at each location via the web interface.
I change the APN on the internet. Upgrade the device from the server. Upgrade the modem from the server.
Then I do a reset by disconnecting the power supply.
I change the APN to private.
I verify remote access.

The device then works at any time (days of the week) until it freezes.
Only disconnecting from the power supply helps.
Then it works normally. The freeze does not recur (yet).

I had a reboot schedule set for every day of the week.
I noticed that there are 2x the same reboot entries with the same time in the logs.
Now I changed the reboot schedule to only Monday and Thursday.
Only one entry appears in the logs but the reboot is performed even when it should not be performed.

Greetings.

I got a RUT955 and tried to upgrade via bootloader to version 07.06.20

Result: UPDATE FAILED, Error: Incorrect checksum.

Am I doing something wrong?

The device is version 07.06.18

Greetings,

Could you please try to upload the latest legacy Firmware(RUT9XX_R_00.06.09.5_WEBUI.bin) to the bootloader? It can be downloaded here: https://wiki.teltonika-networks.com/view/RUT955_Firmware_Downloads

Your device might have an older bootloader version that doesn’t support the latest Firmware.

Afterwards, you should be able to update to the latest firmware (non-legacy) via the WebUI.

OK. I was able to successfully downgrade the device via the bootloader
to version 00.06.09.5.
Which FW version should I upload? The first 00.07.00 or the latest 00.07.06.20?
To upload version 00.07... should I use the bootloader or WebUI?

Greetings,

You should be able to update to the latest firmware version 7.06.20 via the WebUI now.

Justinas

At first you advised me to update via bootloader.
Updating via bootloader upwards does not work.
You advised me to update to legacy version 06.09.5.
I updated using bootloader to 06.09.5 successfully.
I made the jump from 06.09.5 to 07.06.20 using WebUI.
Why did you advise me to update via bootloader when it doesn't work?
Updating via WebUI worked for me before this attempt.

Greetings,

The purpose of recommending the bootloader update was to ensure a completely clean installation. When updates are performed through the WebUI while retaining existing settings, software migration issues can occur, which may lead to the freezing behavior you experienced.

Here’s why this specific update sequence was necessary for your device:

Your device was likely running an older bootloader version that could not properly recognize the file structure of the newer 07.xx firmware, resulting in the checksum error. Flashing the Legacy firmware through the bootloader cleared any potentially corrupted configurations from the previous installation and provided the clean slate we were aiming for. Once the device was restored to a factory default Legacy version, updating to 07.06.20 via the WebUI allowed for a proper and stable migration.

Please let us know whether this device is now functioning correctly without any freezing issues.

Thanks for the reply. In the past I updated my 955 remotely (private APN) from version 06.02 to version 06.09 and then from 06.09 to 07.06.15. I have already performed another update to a newer version locally via LAN.
As I wrote in the past. The freezing is random. I will monitor it for a long time. During 2026 I will perform this procedure on other 955s. I assume that this topic will be locked by then. PS. A colleague has about 250 pcs of 955 and does not have this problem. Before the update he does a default reset. After the update a new configuration.
