RUT955 Can't connect to WiFi as login page does not show

We are on a caravan site with WiFi access. The signal strength on devices is poor, but via roof aerial and RUT955 shows very good when scanning.

  1. If I take my PC nearer to the external source and connect it directs me to a web page to sign in with site provided user and password. Easy.
  2. If I connect via the RUT interface on my PC I get a message telling me “action required”. I assume this is to enter the user and password. But at this stage the PC shows no internet connection and the page I’m directed to can’t connect.
So at this stage I can’t access the site WiFi via the roof aerial/RUT955.
What am I doing wrong as this can’t be an usual way to log in?
    Thanks.

Hello,

A few clarifications I’d like to make before proceeding any further:

If I take my PC nearer to the external source and connect it directs me to a web page to sign in with site provided user and password. Easy.
What do you mean by “external source”? And by “web page” I’d assume you’re referring to the WebUI of the Teltonika RUT955, would that be correct?

If I connect via the RUT interface on my PC I get a message telling me “action required”.
Could you provide a screenshot of this message and explain where are you seeing it exactly? What interface are you connecting to?

M.

This on a Windows PC, in your scenario, most likely indicates that:

  • you have sucessfully conected to the camp wifi and it has allocated you an IP address

  • at this point, although connected to the network, it is waiting for you to sign to the campsite Captive Portal’s ‘splash’ page

  • if you were able to sign in, then you would have internet and their Captive Portal would have associated the RUT955’s MAC address with the correct login credentials

  • but in your current situation though, it seems the Captive Portal’s ‘splash’ page, is not being redirected to the End User Device (PC) attached to your RUT955

  • it also appears that you can successfuly attach directly to the camp wifi, on your PC, bypassing the router. This is because there is no need to redirect the Captive Portal’s ‘splash’ page as the ‘dialogue’ is directly with the End User Device (PC) and not via the router.

If all the above is correct, then please confirm, as it will give MatasR a better idea of what’s going on.

I am unfamiliar with the 955’s firmware and menu structure so I cannot provide correct instructions. I suspect though, you might be steered towards the Travelmate package or enable a UI ‘switch’ for ‘Redirect Captive Portal’. If depends on what your hardware revision and firmware version support.

We’ll let @MatasR direct you on what is possible.

Also try and ensure you are on the latest version of firmware for your device. You should note that there are hardware revisions, some of which limit you to the firmware version you can install.

Thanks to both of you for replying.
This is exactly my issue.
When I first tried I got a small “action required” dialog box, which I presume was the login on the “splash” page. However, when clicking on the link it would not connect as I was “offline”. I cannot reproduce this, but the RUT shows it’s connected to the site WiFi. It’s a “Catch 22”. I can’t get online without the log in and I can’t login without being online, so I am currently using my 4G data allowance.
I am not that familiar with various protocols, so in any suggestions please assume I am an idiot!
