RUT950 Unable to login after setting new password

Hi

We have RUT950 that was previously installed by a 3rd party that we are trying to access.

Despite many attempts, we were unable to carryout a factory reset so used the bootloader menu to update replace the firmware.

The FW installed was RUT9XX_R_00.06.09.WEBUI.BIN

The FW update was successful and router rebooted and allowed us to get the web login.

On 1st login it prompted to create a new password which was accepted and then took us back to the login screen to login with the new password.

Each time we entered the new password, the UI returned an incorrect password error message.

The factory reset and setup routine has been tried 5 or 6 times and each time we are having the same issue in that when the password is changed, we are then unable to login with an incorrect password message being displayed.

We have tried several different passwords and double checked what we have entered but the outcome is still the same

Laptop is connected to the RUT250 via and ethernet cable and we are using an IP address of 192.168.1.10 with a gateway of 192.168.1.1

Hello,

Could you try flashing the latest legacy firmware RUT9XX_R_00.06.09.5 through the Bootloader menu? After successfully installing the firmware, please check if the described issue persists.

If the issue still occurs, could you try accessing the device via CLI/SSH (username: root, password: current/changed admin password) and executing the following command:

rm /usr/share/vuci/menu.d/menu.json

Then, reboot the router and check if the login issue is resolved.

Let me know if that helps or if you need any further assistance.

Best regards,

Hi

Many thanks for the prompt response

I have uploaded RUT9XX_R00.06.09.5 via the bootloader menu

Router restarted, logged in as root and ran the command and had the following output

login as: root
root@192.168.1.1’s password:

BusyBox v1.30.1 () built-in shell (ash)

Teltonika RUT9 series 2020

root@Teltonika:~# rm /usr/share/vuci/menu.d/menu.json
rm: can’t remove ‘/usr/share/vuci/menu.d/menu.json’: No such file or directory

I then attempted to login via the WebUI and on 1st login it prompted me to change the password. Completed the change password process and then as before I get the invalid password message

And, after setting a new password, I am no longer able to ssh into the router using either the default password or the new password I set on 1st login

Hello,

Just to clarify the workflow of the previously provided suggestions:

  1. Install firmware 6.09.5 through the Bootloader menu (if this is already done, skip this step).
  2. Login to the WebUI and set a new password when prompted.
  3. Download and install the latest RutOS 7.6.17 firmware via WebUI (System → Firmware). Preferably, without “Keep all settings” option selected.
  4. Once the RutOS firmware is installed, log in to the WebUI again, change the password (if in previous step “Keep all settings” was not selected), and check if the initial issue persists.
  5. If the issue continues, log in to the router via CLI/SSH and execute the previously provided command and reboot the device.
rm /usr/share/vuci/menu.d/menu.json

Let me know the results or if further assistance is needed.

Best regards,

Hi

The process I have used is

  1. Install firmware 6.09.5 through the Bootloader menu
  2. Login to the WebUI and set a new password when prompted.

This is where the process fails. After setting a new password, I am then prompted to login using the new password and the WebUI tells me I have entered an invalid username/password. Also, I cannot SSH into the system using root and the new password

When setting the new password, I check the password I have entered is correct using the password reveal button

Thanks
