RUT901 not able to register to network

The issue: modem worked just fine in Finland and it was able to connect to LTE network/internet. It was then sent to Germany, and since that it has not been able to connect to (mobile) internet at all.
We have tried with several SIM cards, both local (German) and Finnish operators, those work nicely at the site with other modems (not Teltonika) and cell phones but not anymore when inserted into RUT901. We have also tried playing with Deny data roaming switch, auto and manual APN settings, auto and manual operator selections etc., but every time without success.
Seems like somehow the modem/SIM is not allowed to register to the network. The Operator state mainly remains as Not registered, but apparently every now and then the modem tries to connect and then for a while the status changes into Limited service.
So anybody: please assist - any ideas what to try next? The modem FW version is RUT9M_R_00.07.10
(sorry for the poor picture quality, those screenshots are from a video recording that has been sent by WA…)

Can you upgrade your box to version 07.12.3 and we shall see how it goes?

Hello,

As TeWe mentioned, please update your device to the latest firmware version first.
If the issue persists, kindly follow all the steps provided in this link: Rut956 Operator state N/A Limited service - #3 by Marija and let me know if it resolves the issue, or if you still need further assistance.

Best regards,

While my case is a little different, I seem to have the exact same end result.
Don’t want to hijack this ticket, but if it is the same message, we can perhaps bundle these.

Just for my curiosity, if you go to System → Maintenance → Troubleshoot → System Log → Show
Do you have any messages in your log regarding your SIM card/modem? Such as “URC Event: EMM reject cause” messages. You can search on “Modem”, “gsmd” or “mobifd”.

@Mikej0h Are you on 07.12.03?

Hi @TeWe, yes I’m on:
Firmware: RUTX_R_00.07.12.3
Modem firmware: RG501QEUAAR12A11M4G_04.201.04.201

Factory settings done?
IPv4 only tested?

Hello,

The steps provided in the other post are specifically for devices with a “Limited Service” operation state. Based on your second screenshot, I see that your device is in this state, so I highly recommend following all the outlined steps.

Regarding mobile logs, yes, you can view them in the System Log file. Additionally, if you want to troubleshoot further, you can download a troubleshoot package for a more in-depth analysis.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance!

Best regards,

There seems to be v7.13 available already (dated 3/3/2025), should we test with that one?

@toheikk,

The issue is most likely related to the device’s internal modem or SIM cards, so updating to the latest RutOS firmware may not resolve it directly. However, it is still recommended to install the latest firmware on your RUT901 to benefit from the latest issue fixes and overall improvements.

Additionally, please let me know if you have gone through all the steps I provided and if you found anything in the device logs.

Thank you.
Best regards,

Ok, we’ll try by updating the firmware + going through the steps you mentioned. Please list all files (and details how to extract each of those) that are possibly needed afterwards for further troubleshooting? Such as that troubleshoot file, logs etc? A local colleague in Germany will quickly visit the site maybe tomorrow but won’t stay there, so it would be good to gather all the information that will be useful afterwards if the issue is not resolved during the visit.

In the System → Maintenance → Troubleshoot page in the WebUI, you can download a troubleshoot package containing all device logs. You will need to unzip the package to access the individual files.

If you require further assistance with troubleshooting, I can send you a form so you can privately share the troubleshoot package for detailed analysis.

Please let me know how it goes!

Best regards,

The firmware update did not resolve the issue. But we now have the troubleshoot package from the site/modem. Please instruct how to proceed with that one?

Hello,

I have sent you a form to fill out. Once completed, I will contact you privately. Please use ticket ID “12573”.

Best regards,

Hi. One colleague is visiting the site right now and gets those error messages when setting PDP type as IPv4. Any idea why?

Hello,

If possible, could you kindly try it on the latest 7.13.1 firmware version? The 7.13 version was removed from production due to known issues.
Thank you.

Best regards,

The FW update did not help. “There is no difference with FW 7.13.1. The same messages appears

.”

With 7.13.1, when changing the PDP type, do you encounter ESM failure and User authentication or authorization failed errors?

Could you please specify which PDP type you are trying to select when these errors occur?

Additionally, you can check the EMM and ESM reject cause codes here: LTE Release Causes.

Best regards,

Hi. A few moments later we got some good news: “PDP type is IPv4. But now, after about 15 min it seems to work.”

I wonder was it now the very latest FW that seemed to fix the issue, or that IPv4 selection.
I’m no expert on these, but a bit funny if the dual selection (IPv4/IPv6) causes problems so easily… can’t the modem just automatically start using IPv4 only if IPv6 is not available for some reason.

Hello,

Good to hear that the issue is resolved now!

The issue is most likely related to changing the PDP type to IPv4 only. When you select IPv4/IPv6, the device is instructed to attempt both IPv4 and IPv6 connections simultaneously.
However, when you select IPv4 Only, the device will only use IPv4 for the connection and completely ignore IPv6.

Let me know if you need any further assistance on this topic.

Best regards,
