RUT360 Roaming problem - unreachable modem

I have a problem getting a data connection when roaming abroad on my RUT360

I’m using the latest firmware (RUT36X_R_00.07.04.3) and have done multiple power cycles and factory resets.
The SIM is from Telia (Sweden) and I’m trying to roam in Finland.
Problem started when we connected to the Finish network.
The SIM is enabled for roaming (verified with mobile phone).
I’ve double checked the APN (online.telia.se) with what I get with a mobile phone, same SIM.

The status page cycles through various states of connection; (no connection, searching, roaming), intermittently getting “internal modem unreachable” popup, and 404 on mobile related pages.

I never get “Data connection: Connected” (except 1 time in 5 days)

I’ve tried:

Setting the APN manually (to APN verified with the SIM in mobile phone)
Turned off VoLTE
Set Network type: 4G (LTE) only
Saving and restoring backup
Multiple factory resets

I get the sense that the modem is trying to get connection, does initiate the negotiation (I see it roaming to the right operator) but then fails (or can not get a full data connection fast enough) and then the modem reboots

Any idea of how to solve this?

Hello,

You seem to have tested most of the needed settings, however, could you clarify if the option “Deny data roaming” is disabled in Network → Mobile → General Settings?

Hi !
Yes for sure, ’Deny data roaming’ is disabled.
I have also tested down grading to a number of releases (back to 7.03.01) without luck.
I have collected troubleshoot log and screenshot. Would that be beneficial? (Do I upload to this thread?)

Troubleshoot file should not be uploaded here as it contains sensitive information.
Instead, I will ask to replicate the issue, then navigate to System → Administration → Troubleshoot. Press Show button on the System log, and copy paste the logs from the past few minutes. Please make sure it does not include any sensitive information like a public IP address, etc.

Hello,

It seems we may need to dig a little deeper here, as something seems to be wrong with the modem handling of the connection. It received an IP address 2 times during the logging period, but something went wrong and the cycle repeated. Could you try downgrading to v07.03.4? It can be downloaded here: RUT36X_R_00.07.03.4
Let me know if it manages to connect using this firmware.

I’ve tried to downgrade all the way to 7.03.01 previously (no success), but I’ll try that version again and collect SystemLog

Hi,
Since I’m travelling abroad it is challenging to get a replacement unit from the reseller.
I downgraded to 07.03.04. I did not get a working IP connection but

I get some sort of cell connection ( Status page: STATE: Roaming; Telia FI Telia; 4G (LTE) ) - I can e.g. query ‘status’ over SMS and get an answer.
I get different SystemLog messages (e.g. the daemon.err messages are gone). See one iteration of the SystemLog below.

Hello,

Apologies for a late response.
There have been a few mobile connection-related issues addressed in the latest firmware RUT36X_R_00.07.04.5_WEBUI.bin. Please try updating and check if the issue persists.
Additionally, you could try changing the PDP type of the mobile connection to IPv4/IPv6. This can be done by navigating to Network → Interfaces → General, editing the mob1s1a1 interface, and changing the PDP type.

Hi,
The issue only occurred when roaming (both in Finland and Estonia), unfortunately I’m back home in Sweden and the operator does not employ national roaming. I can’t think of any way of testing without physically travelling abroad.
Is it likely that this firmware patch solves the issue or more likely that there is a hardware issue with my unit (hence asking reseller for a replacement unit under warranty)?

Hello,

Since a few users have reached out regarding roaming data disconnections, I believe this is an edge case, which we cannot reproduce locally. As soon as we manage to replicate it ourselves, or clients reach out within the private channels with this issue, it will be addressed in the firmware release.
If you plan on traveling in the near future, I’d recommend trying RUT36X_R_00.07.02.7, as this release still had an old mobile connection manager, which may handle roaming differently.
