RUT360 - Connecting NordVPN

Hello,

I’m trying to connect NordVPN to my RUT360 router. I have carefully followed the information on the Teltonika wiki in this article - Networking rutx configuration example nordvpn use case.

I get the NordVPN “Connected” in the Open VPN section and my wifi1 and mob1s1a1 WAN interfaces are “Up” but then I can’t connect to the internet through the router. If I delete the Open VPN client then it all works correctly again and I can connect to the internet.

I have tried adding custom DNS addresses (using NordVPN IP addresses) but this doesn’t help.

I’m wondering if there is another setting that I need to configure to get it working?

Thanks,

Paul

Hello,

Connecting to VPN providers like NordVPN and ExpressVPN is now even easier. You just need to enable the “Enable external service” slider, input your information, and the connection will be made without any other interferences. Below is a .gif showing how to configure it.

Best regards,

Hi Marius,

Thanks for the information. I have just followed your instructions and I have the same situation. It appears as if the VPN is “Connected” and both my WAN interfaces are “Up” but still no connection to the internet.

Thanks,
Paul

Sorry Marijus, spellchecker changed your name!

…and when I disable the VPN I regain internet access.

Hi,

It should not work that way. Have you done any additional configuration for the VPN or set up any traffic rules? Can you provide the tutorial you followed for your previous setup? There might be some leftover configuration interfering.

Best regards,

Hi,
I haven’t really altered anything other than setting it up in failover mode so wifi has priority with 4g as the backup.

I deleted all the changes I made from the tutorial I used and then followed your video very carefully. I will check again though.

The tutorial I used previously is this - Template:Networking rutx configuration example nordvpn use case - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Thanks

Would it help to return the router to factory settings and start again, it wouldn’t take me long to do as it’s a basic setup?

If so what’s the method for reseting to factory settings?

Thanks

Hello,

It should help. You can find instructions on how to perform a factory reset here: RUT360 Device Recovery Options - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Best regards,

OK, should I remove the SIM card before doing a factory reset?

Hi,

No, it shouldn’t interfere with a factory reset.

Kind regards

Do I just need to do a “system settings” reset rather than “factory defaults” reset?

If you haven’t configured system settings, it should perform the same reset as a factory one. But to make sure, please do a factory reset.

OK I’ll do a factory reset now and set it up again. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I have done a factory reset.

I only have the SIM card connected and I haven’t set up any other WAN interfaces.

I have connected NordVPN and the status is “Connected” in the Open VPN area. I have internet connection.

I checked my IP address using the NordVPN website and it hasn’t changed from before and after NordVPN was connected which seems odd.

I’m using iCloud Private Relay, will that make a difference?

Hi,

Yes, iCloud Private Relay can interfere with NordVPN and other VPN services. Both iCloud Private Relay and VPNs route your internet traffic through their own servers to hide your IP address and encrypt your data. When both are active, they may conflict.

My advice would be to use only one VPN tool or it’s alternative. In the end, it is a bit redundant to use both of these tools.

Kind regards,

I turned iCloud Private Relay off and I can now see that the IP address is changing when I switch NordVPN on/off on the router. I get a message that my internet traffic is secure as well. So can I assume that every device that connects to the router is now protected with NordVPN (even if iCloud Private Relay disguises it on my Apple devices)?

Next stage is to add another WAN interface…my home wifi… and see what happens

Hi,

Yes, that’s why we added a simplified NordVPN configuration. Your network is secured by NordVPN.

Best regards,

So I set up my home wifi on the router. If I set it to the highest priority I lose internet connection.

It appears that NordVPN works perfectly using just the mobile interface but does not work with my home wifi router connected.

If I give my home router highest priority I lose internet. If I swap back to my mobile being highest priority I don’t get internet back until I disable VPN and check for internet. Once connected if I turn VPN back on internet connection remains OK. I assume this is because I’m back using the mobile connection and not my home router.

With VPN disabled it looks like I can use both my home wifi or mobile connection in the highest priority position.

My ISP is BT and I use a Smart Hub 2 which does not allow an OpenVPN connection directly but as the VPN is on the RUT360 I wouldn’t have thought there would be a problem?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi @Marijus , have you had any further thoughts on this problem?

Thanks,

Paul
