I’m trying to connect NordVPN to my RUT360 router. I have carefully followed the information on the Teltonika wiki in this article - Networking rutx configuration example nordvpn use case.
I get the NordVPN “Connected” in the Open VPN section and my wifi1 and mob1s1a1 WAN interfaces are “Up” but then I can’t connect to the internet through the router. If I delete the Open VPN client then it all works correctly again and I can connect to the internet.
I have tried adding custom DNS addresses (using NordVPN IP addresses) but this doesn’t help.
I’m wondering if there is another setting that I need to configure to get it working?
Connecting to VPN providers like NordVPN and ExpressVPN is now even easier. You just need to enable the “Enable external service” slider, input your information, and the connection will be made without any other interferences. Below is a .gif showing how to configure it.
Thanks for the information. I have just followed your instructions and I have the same situation. It appears as if the VPN is “Connected” and both my WAN interfaces are “Up” but still no connection to the internet.
It should not work that way. Have you done any additional configuration for the VPN or set up any traffic rules? Can you provide the tutorial you followed for your previous setup? There might be some leftover configuration interfering.
Yes, iCloud Private Relay can interfere with NordVPN and other VPN services. Both iCloud Private Relay and VPNs route your internet traffic through their own servers to hide your IP address and encrypt your data. When both are active, they may conflict.
My advice would be to use only one VPN tool or it’s alternative. In the end, it is a bit redundant to use both of these tools.
I turned iCloud Private Relay off and I can now see that the IP address is changing when I switch NordVPN on/off on the router. I get a message that my internet traffic is secure as well. So can I assume that every device that connects to the router is now protected with NordVPN (even if iCloud Private Relay disguises it on my Apple devices)?
Next stage is to add another WAN interface…my home wifi… and see what happens
So I set up my home wifi on the router. If I set it to the highest priority I lose internet connection.
It appears that NordVPN works perfectly using just the mobile interface but does not work with my home wifi router connected.
If I give my home router highest priority I lose internet. If I swap back to my mobile being highest priority I don’t get internet back until I disable VPN and check for internet. Once connected if I turn VPN back on internet connection remains OK. I assume this is because I’m back using the mobile connection and not my home router.
With VPN disabled it looks like I can use both my home wifi or mobile connection in the highest priority position.
My ISP is BT and I use a Smart Hub 2 which does not allow an OpenVPN connection directly but as the VPN is on the RUT360 I wouldn’t have thought there would be a problem?
