Hi there
Since I am often traveling in the mountains and also with a camper, I need a 5G SIM router for the road. ChatGPT recommended the RUT271 for Switzerland. Which external antenna would be the best fit for the RUT271? Would it perhaps make sense to use two such antennas in case of weak signal? Thank you very much for your help…
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out.
First of all, it is important to mention and keep in mind that the RUT271 is a RedCap 5G router that supports only the 5G Standalone (SA) architecture. This means it will only connect to 5G (SA) networks if your mobile carrier has deployed the required infrastructure. If not, the modem will fall back to LTE/4G only, as discussed in the thread here:
Considering your traveling use case, if a reliable 5G connection is essential for you, I would recommend looking into the following alternative routers:
Regarding external antennas, once the router choice is confirmed, I can recommend the best fitting, optimal performance antenna type/model for your use case.
Best regards,
Okay, thank you very much. I understand. My provider uses the SA system, so RUT271 should be the right one for me. Now the question is which outdoor antenna would be best. My provider operates 5G on band n78 (≈3500 MHz).
Hello,
If the N78 band (≈3500 MHz) is your priority, then there are a few outdoor antennas that should work well in your case:
This model can operate in the 3300–3800 MHz range, making it suitable for your preferred N78 band. It also comes with a Wi-Fi antenna connector. Please keep in mind, however, that higher-frequency 5G bands outside this range would not be supported.
This option offers higher gain and a wider frequency range, which makes it a good choice if you expect to operate across different coverage areas or want stronger reception in more challenging environments.
Both can be considered depending on whether your main focus is the N78 band for performance or a broader coverage and stronger gain.
Best regards,
I noticed that the MIMO antenna has four SMA cables, but the RUT271 only has two. Are they really compatible?
Hello,
Yes, the antenna should be compatible. Although the RUT271 has two mobile SMA connectors, when using a 4x4 MIMO antenna, understandably, two of its connectors will remain unused. For the best performance, especially on the N78 band, you will need to test different connector pairs to determine which setup provides the strongest and most stable signal.
Best regards,
