RUT240 as access point, connected to main router

Hello,

I’ve been trying to set up a RUT240 as a simple Wi-Fi access point connected via a LAN cable to an existing router without Wi-Fi.

I thought it would be an easy task, but I’ve had no success so far. I started by disabling the WAN and other interfaces that I didn’t need, and I set up the LAN interface to have an IP outside the DHCP range of the main router, but within the same subnet and mask.

Here are the details:

  • Main router: IP/netmask: 192.168.1.99/255.255.255.0
  • DHCP range: 192.168.1.110–192.168.1.210

Teltonika RUT240:

  • IP: 192.168.1.105
  • DHCP: Disabled
  • Subnet mask: Same as the main router (255.255.255.0)

I also set up a static route to the main router’s IP and subnet mask, but it didn’t work. I’ve tried using DHCP relay as well, but that didn’t solve the issue either.

I’ve been trying for days and I’m desperate for a solution. Thank you for your help!

Hi, @emilio

So… you leave RUT240 in bridge mode to use rut240 as a dumb ap.
Are you using the last firmware avaliable for RUT240?
https://firmware.teltonika-networks.com/7.6.17/RUT2/RUT2_R_00.07.06.17_WEBUI.bin

Have you try to use?

Hello @Marcelo.Barros,

Thanks for replying. Yes, it has the latest firmware and yes, I tryied following the guide but I only need one RUT240 connected over ethernet to the main router.

Maybe this will be a weird question…
Do you leave all rules (firewall) as accept (in/out/forward) and disable masq?

Hi @Marcelo.Barros

Here you have my firewall configuration.

please…
Disable software off loading
disable masquerading… disable mss campling.

Hi @Marcelo.Barros,

thanks for your patiente and fast response.

Now firewall is configured like this:

Lan settings:

Notice I changed IP to 192.168.1.211

and…
Can you ping ?
From a PC, connect to WiFi of rut, connect to lan, connect to main router?

Hi @Marcelo.Barros,

No, I cannot.

Any ideas?

edit: wifi settings, just a test SSID

edit2: routing settings

Hi… You dont need a static route… because the RUT240 is dumb mode.
But… You leave this… because you need to access it, from anywhere… ok… leave this route.

Hello @emilio,

In this case, if your main goal is to have an AP and there is no need to bridge your home network with the RUT240, you should connect an Ethernet cable from your main router’s LAN port to the RUT240’s WAN port. Ensure that the WAN interface (Network → WAN) is enabled with DHCP or static protocol (correct IP and gateway should be specified).

Additionally, to prevent any conflicts, change the RUT240’s LAN IP to a different subnet’s (e.g., 192.168.2.1/24) and enable the DHCP server. This setup eliminates the need for adding a static route, and clients connected to the RUT240 AP will have internet access through the default gateway of your main router (192.168.1.99).

I hope this helps!

Best regards,

Hello @Martynas,

Thanks for your response. It inmediately worked with lan cable to the RUT240, but it is heavily, heavily restricted over wifi. Some devices won’t connect and even if they do, it only gets speeds of 100kbps at most.
Which brings me to this question: is the RUT240s wifi card capable of usuable speeds for simple acces point use and simple connection to the internet?

Thank you very much for your help,

Emilio
