RUT240 7.06.3 cellular sms not working

I have an RUT240 running firmware 7.06.3, and the cellular sms appears to not work any more.

I’m attempting to change the apn via SMS with ‘cellular apn=internet’, and while the command appears to be accepted (it doesnt appear in the received messages tab), the apn doesnt change. ‘cellular auto_apn=1’ isnt working either, so I suspect the whole cellular command has failed.
I can change the apn manually in the GIU, but that will not help me if the data connection drops and I need to SSH into the device.
Can you please test this to confirm the issue.

Hello,

I’ve tested the cellular SMS command, but everything seems to be working correctly.
By default, the command needs to include the device password, so an example could look like so:

Admin12345 cellular apn=internet

And the logs should look like so:

Tue Feb 20 15:08:36 2024 kern.notice kernel: SMS received from: +370xxxxxxx (internal modem)
Tue Feb 20 15:08:36 2024 kern.notice kernel: simcard configuration has been changed
Tue Feb 20 15:08:36 2024 kern.notice kernel: network configuration has been changed
Tue Feb 20 15:08:36 2024 daemon.info mobifd: [gsm.modem0] Config reload initiated
Tue Feb 20 15:08:36 2024 daemon.info /usr/sbin/sms_utils: Removing SMS '2' from memory
Tue Feb 20 15:08:37 2024 daemon.info mobifd: [gsm.modem0] SIM is ready
Tue Feb 20 15:08:37 2024 daemon.info mobifd: [gsm.modem0] SIM is ready
Tue Feb 20 15:08:38 2024 daemon.notice netifd: mob1s1a1 (15360): Stopping network mob1s1a1
...

Additionally, while this is not relevant for RUT240, the command by default is only configured for SIM 1.
It’s also worth noting, that some operators on the mobile internet plans disable SMS functionality, thus that could also be the issue here. Could you try sending a regular SMS to the device and check if it appears in Services → Mobile Utilities → Messages?

Best regards,

Thanks for checking that. So it seems we’re both right.
If I factory reset the RUT240, then the cellular command works fine. I can also rebuild our config completely from there (locally), and the cellular command keeps working. Incidentally, the config goes from being about 280kB in the upgraded router, down to 61kB when built from scratch.
However, on each upgraded configured router (upgraded from various firmware versions), the cellular command stops working. As there are about 100 of these installed remotely, rebuilding them remotely isnt an option without the cellular command. As long as I dont need to SSH into the router (CGNAT on the normal APN stops that, so the cellular command is needed to change APN) its not too big a deal.
I’ll check the logs on a field router and see what it says.
