RUT230 keeps disconnecting from RMS VPN hub

I have a strange situation with RMS that is happening on 2 RUT230 devices with firmware RUT2_R_00.07.03.4 (last for this model).

Those devices where previously used only with RMS remote management, but have been recently modified to also connect to an RMS VPN hub (each one to a different hub).

All works as expected for a while, but many times at day, RUT230 disconnects from the VPN hub, even if it remain reachable from remote management. I’m sure that there is no connectivity issue during this disconnection.

I’ve replicated the same problem using another RUT230 on a different location and internet connection, with all parameters at factory default except for settings needed for internet access and RMS, so i’ve excluded that the issue is caused by some misconfiguration on the router itself.

When this issue happens, the only way to make the RUT230 come back in the VPN in a short time is to use the RMS VPN HUB button to update configuration and certificated on the device, this way in less than a minute it comes back in the VPN.

It comes back even if we do nothing, but it can take anywhere between a few minutes minutes and 3-4 hours to come back.

In System log there is a clear pattern, a while after the “Initialization Sequence Completed” openvpn log, there is a “Inactivity timeout (–ping-restart), restarting”, followed by a dnsmasq restart. After that, there is a variable number of log blocks like the one below, after a variable number of this “blocks” (can be a few or hundreds) it finally comes back online, with a new “Initialization Sequence Completed” message and a new dnsmasq restart.

This below is a portion of the system log from the RUT230 in my netwotk where i’ve been able to replicate the issue. In this case the disconnection is of less than 10 minutes, with less than 30 connection attempts before reconnection, but as stated above, in other cases the same issue have been around for hours with hundreds of failed connection attempts.

I’d like to first mention that RUT230 is already on both, the End Of Life and End Of Support stage, meaning further improvements/updates will not be released for it. I’ll also be unable to escalate this issue further if we’re unable to resolve it with casual troubleshooting.

Moving on, I’d like to clarify the currently used server for your VPN Hub, is it by any chance Germany? If so, at least for now there is a known issue with the server that is actively being worked on by our RMS R&D team. With that said, you can either wait for the fix to be pushed into production (no ETA for now), or you can opt for creating a new VPN Hub on the Bahrain server for testing purposes.

I know that the RUT230 is currently EOL, but for geographical reasons we’re currently unable to replace it with a newer model, we will do this as soon as possible.

Both real VPN hubs and the test VPN hub that i’ve used to replicate the issue are located in Germany. Can you give me a little more details on that particular issue with German VPN hubs? In particular, since when it is present and wich tipe of device it affects? Because i’ve not noticed a similar behavior on other VPN hubs with other routers (RUT200 and RUT140).

Disconnections may happen, or sending a continuous ping to a test host can stop going through at any moment, and moments later can start going through again, at least that’s from what I’ve experienced with some of the client setups.

When it comes to devices, this applies to every single one of them, since it is server related. As for when it is present, we have no idea, we started getting queries about this kind of issue round about a week ago.

Of course, this could also be device-related, as you said yourself, newer models don’t experience this kind of issue, whereas the older one does. Old firmware, such as 7.03 can very well have some old issues with either VPNs or Stability, whereas newer firmware has already fixed those issues. At the end of the day, if nothing helps, I would start thinking about upgrading your devices with at least somewhat newer models.

I can confirm that the issue was caused by german servers. This was happening at least once per hour, more than 8 hours have passed since when i’ve switched to bahrein servers and all is working as expected, with no disconnection.
