RUT200 as a failover for a FritzBox 4060

Hello,

I would like to approach the professionals here who are experienced in using a RUT200.

My plan is to use the LTE connection of a RUT200 as failover protection for the VDSL of an FritzBox 4060.

Currently, the setup is as follows:

A Draytek Vigor 165 in bridge mode delivers the VDSL signal to a FritzBox 4060.

Since my VDSL line is not 100% stable and occasionally resynchronizes, I have considered using the failover protection of a FritzBox 4060 to switch to LTE in the event of a fault.

At first, I discovered that my Huawei E3372 mobile stick was not compatible with the Fritzbox 4060. Then, faulty research led me to purchase a Teltonika TRM240, which works wonderfully on its own on a PC, but not with the FritzBox 4060. So I bought a RUT200 in the hope that it would be relatively easy to get the FritzBox 4060 to work with it.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do this yet. I admit that the variety of parameters on the RUT200 is a little overwhelming for me.

As specified by FRITZ, I selected the failover protection in the FritzBox settings for the LAN1 port and contacted the RUT200 there. The LTE connection in the RUT200 is active. Unfortunately, the FritzBox 4060 did not recognize the RUT200 as a device suitable for failover protection. It seems to be a bit finicky. Then I tried connecting the RUT200 between the Vigor and the FritzBox. As I understand it, the RUT200 should make the PPPoE dial-up connection, switch to LTE in case of a VDSL signal failure, and then switch back again. I wanted to connect the FritzBox to the DMZ of the RUT200. Here, too, I failed miserably.

Since I find the RUT200 very interesting as such, I would like to ask here about experiences with my project, or whether I should just write it off as unfeasible.

Below is my current working setup:

- Draytek Vigor 165 on the WAN port of the 4060

- 4060 has 10.0.0.0/24 in the LAN

- Pi-hole serves as the DNS server in the LAN of the 4060

- There are port forwardings for 4 servers that provide services to the Internet

- DynDNS for these 4 servers is provided by a Pi 4 in the LAN, which acts as a reverse proxy and handles DynDNS and Letsencrypt

- The mobile provider Freenet (O2) does not assign a public IP address, which means that the services would not be accessible in LTE mode, but I could live with that in the short term

- The RUT200 is currently set to 192.168.5.1 and LTE is working, but not yet integrated

Does anyone have experience with these scenarios, where the RUT200 is connected to the LAN1 port of a 4060 to serve as failover protection for VDSL, or where the RUT200 is connected between a VDSL modem and the main router and performs the failover itself?

However, my premise is always that the 4060 retains its LAN because it also contains repeaters that the 4060 operates as a MESH master.

Please forgive me for my terminology, which is certainly not always correct. I am not a professional networker, but administer my home network just for fun.

Best regards,

Carsten

Greetings,

I’m not very familiar with the capabilities of the Fritzbox, the RUT200 itself shouldn’t require additional configuration apart from the LAN IP. Unfortunately, I also couldn’t find much information in English regarding the Fritzbox settings.

Are you able to configure one of the LAN ports on the Fritzbox to function as a WAN port? If this option is available, it would probably be the simplest solution.

If that option is not available and you connect the RUT200 to a LAN port on the Fritzbox, both devices should be on the same subnet. In this case, you could assign a static IP address to the RUT200 and then add a default route on the Fritzbox so that traffic exits through the RUT200. Make sure to set the metric of this route lower than the main WAN route.

The route on the Fritzbox should look similar to the one shown in the screenshot, with the gateway set to the RUT200 LAN IP.

Please let me know if this helps.

Justinas

Hello Justinas,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

I tried again today to get the RUT200 to work with the FritzBox 4060, but unfortunately without success.

I have given up and will return the device. On the one hand, this is certainly due to the somewhat finicky FritzBox 4060 and also to the sheer flood of parameters on the RUT200, which is simply too much for me to handle.

I will try with a FritzBox 6850 LTE and hope that at least these two FritzBoxes will be compatible with each other!

Nevertheless, thank you again for your tips!

Best regards,

Carsten

Hi, Falconcrest,

Would you be willing to get onto a remote session with us via AnyDesk or TeamViewer for us to try & investigate this case and see if we can get this to work?

If you are, I’ve sent you a form to fill out, which you’ll receive to your e-mail inbox. Simply fill it out with your contact details & for the Ticket ID field use 18038. I’ll reach out to you once the form appears in our system and then we can schedule a time.

Regards,
M.

Hello Matas,

thank you for your feedback, but the problem has been resolved in that I have returned the RUT200.

After some research, albeit inconclusive, it appears that a FritzBox only accepts an LTE Fritzbox as a failover via LAN.

As I already mentioned, I am not a network professional, but the FritzBoxes must negotiate something special with each other that other routers cannot do or do not have implemented. Unfortunately, there is no information available on this.

Nevertheless, I would like to thank everyone involved here once again for their efforts!

Best regards,

Carsten

Greetings,

Thank you for informing us & thank you for the feedback. Hopefully, you get your desired setup up and running as soon as possible.

I wish you the best in your future endeavors,
Matas.
