RUT X50 - Implement Multi AP Priority function

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Is it possible to implement a function for the next firmware update to change the priority of the connected W-LAN access points in a Multi AP so that all access points have equal rights?

I can change the priority from top to bottom but I,d like to configure all access points to have equal rights.

Please see pictures attached.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Nicolai

Hello,

I have forwarded your request to our RnD team for review. Once I receive any updates or useful information from them regarding the possibility of implementing this feature in a future firmware update, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Hello,

thank you very much for your effort.

I´m looking forward to your reply

Hello,

Could you please describe in more detail what you would expect from the suggested functionality? Currently, with the Multi AP priority setting, the system also checks the signal strength of the access point. If all APs are set to equal priority, the function would operate almost the same as it does now with a configured priority setting.

One potential downside is that it could become more challenging to determine which SSID was returned first in the scan list.

Hello Martynas,

the router should establish a connection with the access points that are in the list.

If one of the access points cannot be reached, the next access point should be used.

Currently, the access point “OPPO A54 5G” in second place in the list is only used for a short time (60s) and then an attempt is made to establish a connection with access point “GSF-Gast”.

Even if access point “GSF-Gast” (priority 1) is not available, the router attempts to establish a connection with it.

Thank you very much for your effort.

Kind regards

Hello,

Thank you for your detailed description.

Could you please confirm which firmware version you are currently using? If it’s from an older release, I recommend updating to the latest version, RUTX_R_00.07.10.2, to see if it resolves the issue.

Additionally, during the scenario you described, when the router attempts to connect to the “OPPO A54 5G” (priority 2) AP, could you check whether the “GSF-Gast” (priority 1) AP is visible to the device? You can do this by using the Scan option in the WebUI (Network → Wireless) and checking if the AP (priority 1) appears in the scan results.

Best Regards,

Hello,

you´re welcome!

I´m using the latest firmware version, RUTX_R_00.07.10.2.

The Wi-Fi network “GSF-Gast” (priority 1) has been deactivated and the SSID is no longer visible.

The router will then only recognize the Wi-Fi network “OPPO A54 5G” (priority 2) and will only switch back to the Wi-Fi network “GSF-Gast” (Priority 1) when it is visible again.

In my opinion, this is a good solution.

The information I was missing was that the Wi-Fi networks are recorded and subdivided according to the signal strength.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback!

I’m glad I could help clarify how the multi AP functionality works and provide the information you needed.

If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to reach out.

Hello Martynas,

just one more question:

What if Access Point “GSF-Gast” (priority 1) is in first place, but the signal strength is lower than Access Point “OPPO A54 5G” (priority 2)?

Will the router automatically switch to access point “OPPO A54 5G” (priority 2), even though it is at priority 2?

Hello Martynas,

any more suggestions?

Hello,

Apologies for the slight delay in responding.

To answer your question: if the Priority 1 access point (AP) has a lower signal strength than the Priority 2 AP, the router will still remain connected to the higher priority AP. It will only switch if the Priority 1 AP’s signal drops below a shallow threshold, at this point, the router will rescan the wireless network and attempt to connect to the second priority AP.

Hello Martynas,

thank you very much for your reply.

Can the threshold value for the wireless connections be set?

Kind regards

Hello,

Currently, there is no option to set the threshold value in the Multi AP configuration.

Hello Martynas,

thank you very much for your reply.

Could you tell me the threshold value for the wireless connections resp. where I could find it?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Hello,

Thank you for your patience. I appreciate your question regarding the threshold value for wireless connections, and I’d also like to clarify any confusion about the multi-AP functionality.

Upon reviewing how the multi-AP feature operates, I can confirm the following:

  • The system prioritizes connections based on the defined priority levels of available access points (APs).
  • It will only switch to a lower-priority AP if no higher-priority AP is detected within the scanned network, or if the signal strength of the higher-priority AP is either extremely low or completely unavailable.

At this time, there isn’t a specific signal strength threshold value documented for triggering these switches.

If you have any further questions or need additional support, please feel free to reach out.
