Rate-limited by my mobiler provider?

Please help!

I own an OTD500 with a 5G sim card. It has been working fine for a long time and the 5G connection always had a nice 300 to 400mbit speed.

A few days ago, my speed dropped to 45mbit :frowning: a significant change.

Here is the connection report from the OTD500:

Am I being rate-limited by the mobile provider? or is there a problem with my local 5G base station/antenna?

The issue is only with the 5G signal. The 4G+ signal is perfect and retains its speed (but comes from a different base station/antenna than the 5G signal).

Hello Fortel,

Your 5G n78 signal is quite weak at the moment, which explains the slow speeds you’re seeing, the RSRP value is -106 which indicates its barely reaching your device. A few things worth trying:

First, consider relocating the device , even moving it a few meters closer to a window or higher up can sometimes make a noticeable difference in signal quality.

It’s also worth doing a quick check on your mobile antennas make sure they’re all firmly connected to the router

It would also help to know are the slow speeds constant, is it always stays at around 45Mbps, or do they only happen at certain times of the day?

Another thing you can try is manually locking to a different 5G band in the router settings sometimes the automatically selected band isn’t the best one available in your area.

Lastly, if the signal issue persists, it might be worth reaching out to your mobile carrier to ask whether there are any known coverage or signal issues with the 5G tower in your area they may be able to help or provide more details
You can check with cell mapper the location of the nearest cell tower in your area.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

I can’t move the OTD500 because I have it mounted high up on a pole  outside my house, and it points directly to the 5G antenna, which is only 1km away from me (I can actually see it when I’m up on the pole).

I did what you suggested and I had my Samsung phone switch on the 5G data and the speed is the same, 45Mbps :frowning: so the 5G signal in my area is very dead or I am being rate-limited.

I’ll contact my mobile phone carrier, something I was trying to avoid because their customer support is horrible. Oh well…

I just wanted to let everyone know, that the problem was the firmware version OTD5_R_00.07.23.

Once I upgraded to firmware version OTD5_R_00.07.23.1 the speed went back to 400Mbps

Glad it’s solved but surprised it was caused by firmware, because nothing changed in the firmware version when the speed suddenly dropped, and your phone was reporting 45mbps also. Could it have been a coincidence your provider lifted a speed limit arond the same time you upgraded the firmware?

When the speed dropped, it was the same period I upgraded to the bad firmware OTD5_R_00.07.23.

I did not mention that, because it seemed irrelevant, and I expected the problem to be with the antenna.

But today I did a speed test (45Mbps) before updating the firmware and another speed test (320Mbps) after updating to firmware OTD5_R_00.07.23.1, so that seems to have fixed the problem.
