Possible to setup a wifi hotspot as a failover? Sometimes my 5G phone gets connection where the RUT241 doesn't

If this is possible, can someone provide step by step how to do this. I have spent a couple of hours attempting to add this and change the order and nothing seems to work out as one would expect.

There seems to be a number of mandatory fields that I have no idea how to fill in.

I have reached out to Teltonika directly a couple of times on the online form on the website with zero response.

Any help is appreciated.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your query.

We are currently working on it, and will be back with a response as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience,

Regards,
Teltonika Team

Hi there,

Yes, setting up your RUT241 to use a WiFi hotspot (e.g. your phone) as a failover for its mobile WAN is officially supported, but it must be configured through the WebUI (not the RutOS app).

Set Up WiFi as WAN (Wireless Client Mode)

  1. Navigate to: Network -> Wireless -> SSIDs
  2. Press Scan
  3. Select your phone’s SSID, click Join Network
  4. Enter WiFi password
  5. In General Setup:
  • Set Mode = Client
  • Set Network = wan2 (or create a new one named e.g. wifiwan)
  1. Click Save & Apply

Configure WAN Interface for WiFi Client

  1. Go to: Network -> Wan
  2. Locate your new WiFi client interface
  3. Press Edit
  4. In Protocol: choose DHCP
  5. Under General Settings, confirm:
  • IPv4 assignment Automatic (unless static needed)
  1. Save & Apply

Enable Failover and Prioritize Mobile as Primary

Go to: Network -> Failover
You will see all WAN interfaces listed (e.g. mob1s1a1, wifiwan)
Change the priorities of your interfaces and enable the failover function for them.
Click Save & Apply

Great to hear this is possible. Thanks for the detailed instructions. When next on the boat in 2 weeks I will give this a go and report back.
