OpenVPN service restart if LTE drops

Hi all,

I need help/ideas on how to solve this issue.

We have about 45 RUT200 devices deployed with LTE connection that are connecting to a OpenVPN server. From time to time some devices drop due to LTE connection issues or poor network. I do have Ping Reboot setup, to reboot the device if it can’t ping an internal IP, but this solution sometimes goes into an infinite loop of restarting the devices.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Device drops LTE and with it the OpenVPN connection
  • Device restarts, LTE connection is taking a long time to connect, sometimes minutes
  • OpenVPN service dies, because there is not internet connection and never restarts
  • This goes in a loop

I tried to look into Event Juggler, but couldn’t figure out how to use it for my case…

Greetings,

Welcome to Teltonika Community!

To help identify the cause, please clarify:

System

  • What firmware version is installed?
  • Does the issue affect all routers or only some?

LTE Connection

  • How long does LTE reconnection usually take?
  • After reconnection, does normal internet access work?
  • Is a new IP address assigned?

VPN Behavior

  • After LTE recovers, what is the OpenVPN service status (running, stopped, or disconnected)?
  • Does restarting OpenVPN manually restore the connection?

Configuration

  • What Ping Reboot settings are currently used?
  • Have longer retry intervals been tested?
  • Has Event Juggler been tested for restarting OpenVPN?

Logs

  • Are there OpenVPN or system log errors after LTE reconnects?

This information will allow me to investigate further.

You can add screenshots of your configuration, but make sure your personal information such as public IP address or serial number of the device is hidden, since this is a public forum.

I look forward to your reply,

Best regards,
V.
