Hi there, I’m new to my RUTX50 and networking, please be kind!
My RUTX50 is in use on a boat, with a modified starlink (powered by 48V DC) connected to the WAN and a local SIM card installed for backup. The configuration is currently very basic and standard, I was planning to set up more functionality over time.
Until a couple of days ago everything was working fine.
I use a Mac and manage my gmail account in the Mac Mail app.
I can still connect to the internet via the RUTX50 but now in the Mac Mail app, the ‘handshake’ with gmail has stopped working so I can’t send or receive emails using the Mail app. I’ve tried deleting and then reinstalling the email accounts from within the Mail app, and Mail hangs while it says “checking account” and then later will display “account offline” which does not change even when I select “take all accounts online” in Mail. As soon as I disconnect the Mac from the RUTX50 and connect to my iPhone hotspot, the mail account (within the Mail app) shows as online again and I can send and receive emails as normal. Change back to connecting via the RUTX50 and I can’t send or receive any more. However, sending and receiving directly from the gmail webmail interface, while connected to internet via the RUTX50, works fine.
Apple are at a loss as to what is going wrong.
Can anyone suggest what might be happening or how I can fix this?
Many thanks,

It’s not only about “smtp” (which is sending emails), no worries ![]()
See post #3 there - sounds very similar to your problem.
I am not using Gmail - but it might be the case you need to somehow (re-)authenticate your RUTX50 within Gmail?
The fact that internet in general works tells us that your RUTX50 is generally fine but you need to troubleshoot within gmail.com in regards to security/devices allowed.
Hi TeWe
Thanks for your suggestion. I previously had 2 step authentication turned on with Google Authenticator as the second stage. I currently have Starlink as my main internet source rather than a local SIM card (in fact, the local SIM card in the RUTX50 has expired because I am travelling). Are there additional ways I can authenticate the RUTX50 with google / gmail, other than using a SIM card? I understand your suggestion that I should also contact google about this and I will do so, and will post back as and when the problem is fixed. In the meantime, other suggestions are welcome!
I have got a bit further in identifying the problem, which sounds as though it is to do with a broader authentication issue.
- As previously identified, when I am connected to the RUTX50 wi fi, I am no longer able to send or receive using the Mac Mail app.(However, I can still send and receive email using the same gmail address if I use the google webmail App instead of the Mac Mail app).
- Also, when connected to the RUTX50 wi fi, I am no longer able to use Skype for phone calls, it no longer connects. Presumably this means that the problem is with some RUTX50 authentication / handshake issue, not specifically to do with the Mail app.
- When I eliminate the RUTX50 and connect MacBooks and iPhones directly to the Starlink wi-fi signal, everything works (including Skype and the Mac Mail app), no problem.
- Note that when I use the RUTX50 wi-fi, I can access the internet fine for general browsing.
Any tips for how I can troubleshoot why Skype is also not connecting when using the RUTX50? Thanks in advance.
Can anyone give me some suggestions as to what they think might be happening, or what I can search on in order to find a solution? thanks!
Only a suggestion for GMail , have you tried setting up a GMail Application Password and tried that on the Mac to see if that does the trick. You can use the same password on the RUTX or any other non-compliant devices / software. GMail requires that 2FA is setup on GMail.
For an overview of the Application Password, see here → Sign in with app passwords - Google Account Help
A wild shot in the dark for Skype … have you 2FA enabled for Skype, if yes, try turning it off and see what happens.
