Keep RUTX11 AP radios separate (2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz) or select both together for an AP?

Dear Teltonika Team, dear Users,

In the RUTX11’s SSID configuration for an Access Point, I see the possibility to select individual radios 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, or select both of them, i.e. there are 2 entries for AP radios.

Do you have recommendations what is better to use?

If I understand it correctly, it might have an advantage to have 2 radios separate, i.e. one for 2.4 GHz and the other for 5 GHz, so devices that only can connect to a 2.4 GHz AP, can connect to the RUTX11 without problems, e.g. an ESP32 (AFAK, it does not understand 5 GHz). Or is it all the same in the end?

Kind regards
7wells

Hi 7wells,

You can use both wireless radio on the same SSID. It will combine both radio frequencies. This allows the device to connect which has higher signal or coverage. Please refer below about a simple explanation about wireless radios.

Hi @Janmiguel

Thanks for your reply. I wonder about advantages and disadvantages to have radios combined or separate.

E.g., the RUTX11 has 2 radios (only), correct? Then I could set them up as follows (different possibilities):

  • Radio 1: 2.4 GHz
    Radio 2: 5 GHz

  • Radio 1: 2.4 GHz
    Radio 2: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

  • Radio 1: 5 GHz
    Radio 2: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

  • Radio 1: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
    Radio 2: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

I see (at least) these 2 topics of interest:

  1. Especially in context of connecting the RUTX11 to public WiFi networks, there seem to be some extra thoughts necessary. If see it correctly, I cannot set up my RUTX11 2.4 GHz radio to be connected to my private router at home and also have it set up with a puplic WiFi (e.g. camp site), because only one is possible. Of course, I would have the second radio available, but then it really matters how the 2 radios are set up with regard to have 2.4 GHz separate from 5 GHz, have one of the 2 radios combine them, or have both radios combine both frequency bands.

  2. Furthermore, there are some devices and/or public WiFi APs that are not 5 GHz capable. They are restricted to the RUTX11’s 2.4 GHz radio. If one radio of the RUTX11 has (only) 2.4 GHz, these devices can connect to it, but what happens if the radio is 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz combined?

Do you have any guidance that you could share about the 2 topics?

Again, thanks a lot for your patience and help!
