How to "update" configuration template for new firmware version?

Hi,

in the RMS, the configuration templates are somewhat tied to the firmware version. So, after upgrading a device from 7.17 to 7.18, my prepared configurations no longer match and can no longer be selected for application on a router.

Is there a possibility to “update” the configuration template inside the RMS so that I can also apply it to a router with firmware 7.18? It would be complicated and error-prone to start over again with each new firmware, so there probably is a possibility to re-use existing configurations for older firmwares also with newer firmware versions, right?

Greetings, Marc

Greetings,

RMS doesn’t have a feature to make the template work for different firmware versions. However, you can try changing the versions in the configuration file as a workaround. Just keep in mind that it may not work if there are bigger changes made in the firmware (endpoints changed, etc.).

Here is how to achieve this:
Go to Management → Devices, click on Actions → Configuration → Configuration templates and download the configuration file, by clicking the button shown in the picture

It’s a JSON file, you can open it with Notepad or some other text editor. At the start of the file you can see the version (this is the API version) and firmware. Edit the firmware to the newer one and the API version to the one listed here: https://developers.teltonika-networks.com/

If the API version is, for example, 1.10, in the file you have to write 1.10.0

Please let me know if this helps you out.

Thank you. That was helpful.

I must say that I don’t like this method at all. It doesn’t give me a good feeling to just patch a new version number into the configuration, forcing the configuration to be applied to a different firmware, which is the exact thing that Teltonika wanted to prevent from happening by tying a configuration to a firmware version.

There should absolutely be an “update” function in the RMS, which would end in a list of configuration options where firmware changed, so that one can manually review only the things that have changed. Teltonika Support will always claim that the source for misbehavior is a remotely administered config that was forced onto the wrong firmware version, and starting over from zero just for a new firmware version is unacceptable AND will cause users to not upgrade their routers.

Please consider this a feature request.

Greetings,

Thank you for the suggestion. I have already contacted our R&D team regarding this improvement. I will get back to you once I get an answer from them.
