We are lookng for a way to preconfigure our routers with a custom firmware but would rather not have to access the .1 subnet in order to do so. Is there a way to update the firmware from the USB port of the router? If it were possible to put the firmware on a USB stick, then boot into bootloader mode and have the firmware auto install, it would be great!

There is no way to achieve the desired functionality without first accessing the router. You would need CLI access to run the sysupgrade command or import a startup script similar to the one described here: RUT Config upload automatically via USB - Networking Solutions - Teltonika Community
I would also suggest considering RMS. If the devices have internet access, you can perform firmware upgrades through it: How to upgrade a router’s firmware version via RMS? - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Thank you for your timely answer.
Updating via RMS also requires initial local configuration of the router to enable RMS, hence requiring to log using address .1.1 . But I guess that’s ok, we’ll prepare a setup rig with the proper ip address for initial configuration. The bootloader option still simplifies the process by bypassing the need to use the preconfigured / laser-etched unique password of each unit.
Thank you very much also for the USB update script reference you sent, that might prove handy if we need to do updates outside of RMS.
