Failover with Starlink mini and ESIM on Rutm54

I have a Rutm54 with latest firmware 7.16.1 installed. On the eSIM I have a German Telekom Profile installed. This is working fine.

Additionally I have a Starlink mini on which the Router is in bypass mode which means it’s disabled. I connect the mini with the original lan cable to the wan port on the rutm54. To be sure that Traffic must go over the mini I disabled the eSIM mob1s3a1. Even this works fine.

Finally I wanted to setup failover whereas the mini is the one to use if available one the eSIM only if the mini is offline. I did everything as described for the 2 interfaces. Failover is also enabled for both. Wan has Metric 1 and mob1s3a1 has metric 2. Failover is set as mode. When the mini is active I can see in Network-Failover-Multiwan-General that wan is online and mob1s3a1 is on standby.

But when I go to whatismyip.org I see that my IP is form German Telekom. Also the traffic goes over mob1s3a1. This is visible on Status-Realtime data-Traffic and also on my data of my Telekom contract which is going down. Even when I go to pass.telekom.de which shows my remaining data I see a result which is only possible when data goes over the mobile interface.

When I disable mob1s3a1 or just disconnect it the whole traffic immediately goes over the wan interface which means over the mini. Telekom pass page tells me that I have to connect with my sim which is correct. And whatismyip shows the Starlink ip.

After turning on mob1s3a1 it’s going back to sending everything over mob1s3a1 also definitely configured differently. After hours of tests and investigations I have no idea what to do to get it working. I guess it has to do with wrong set routes but I am not sure. Is this probably a bug in the firmware?

Hello,

Failover mode works by checking the physical state of interfaces. If WAN is ‘online’ but routing policy is not prioritized (custom rule not present), default traffic may still pass over lower-metric interfaces depending on application bindings.

Could you try setting up Policy based routing to force the traffic to go through the WAN interface? More information here: RUTM54 Routing - Teltonika Networks Wiki

Kind regards,
M.
