Dynamic DNS not updating

We have a number of Teltonika routers and Three SIM’s in use that are causing problems in a couple of areas in the country, Trowbridge and Bristol.

These have in service for several months without any issues.

Over the last few weeks the Dynamic DNS (noip.com) service has stopped generating updates and the status of Last & Next Update becomes blank.

We have tried swapping both routers and SIM cards with known working units and the fault comes back in these locations.

One would assume then that the routers are fine and it is a mobile network issue.

Has anyone any ideas on how to move this issue forward with the network provider

It may seem a basic question, and one that you have answered yourself, but have you checked that those particlar no-ip domain names are still valid and live, or haven’t been flagged by them as abusive?

Hi Mike, we have checked all of your suggestions. Even taken a known working router, SIM and dynamic host/DNS to one of the locations and the update fails

If you look at /tmp/log/ddns/{insert DDNS name}.log - does this give any insights. This log is written by /usr/lib/ddns/update_no-ip_com.sh … assuming you’re using the noip.com service, preconfigured in the router.

Thank you Mike for pointing me in this direction, I didn’t know there was a specific ddns log available to download in the troubleshooting file.

The RUTX50 has been okay since the last reboot, so will wait for failure and check the log.

Are you able to confirm if no-ip traffic is possibly being blocked? For example, can a device connected to the Teltonika reach out to http://checkip.dyndns.com/ or https://www.noip.com/ ?

We don’t have any equipment on the router capable of checking, may leave a Raspberry Pi on site so we can do further checks when it fails….

You could use SYSTEM > TROUBLESHOOT > DIAGNOSTICS > PING

If remote, then you’d have to access via A) open a remote session in RMS or B) attach via another VPN tunnel.

For option B, our standard configuration will always include a VPN authenticating to our own VPN Server sitting on a Public IP, irrespective if the ‘Use Case’ requires it or not. If we need to ‘get to’ the device, we just send it an SMS to ‘spin up’ the tunnel - this way will also deal with SIM’s that do not have a public IP. It is also handy, when RMS is ‘down’. This option is not viable if your SIM is a ‘Data Only’ plan.

Thanks again Mike, we do have the routers on RMS so will try PING to https://www.noip.com/ when the update fails next.

Hi, since all the great advice given by forum members we have not seen the fault come back, very frustrating.

@Marija can we self host RMS?
